Sussex Tech senior Emily Macklin donated more that $1,400 to the Alzheimer's Association of Delaware Thursday, the result of a spaghetti dinner she organized at McColley's Chapel, near Ellendale.
The Sept. 29 dinner drew nearly 150 people, who combined to raise $1,473.84 for the Alzheimer's Association caregivers' outreach programs.
Macklin, 17, said the fundraiser was a part of her senior project at Sussex Tech. She said she chose to donate to the Alzheimer's Association because the disease claimed the life of her great uncle.
Jamie Magee, Sussex County branch coordinator for the Alzheimer's Association, said she was amazed by Macklin's efforts.
"This is just phenomenal," she said. "We've never had anyone raise that amount from a dinner. Emily did an outstanding job."
Magee said the money would be used for outreach programs, teaching care-givers the best practices for how to tend to love ones diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
On Nov. 6 the Association is sponsoring a seminar at Heritage at Milford entitled "Know the 10 Warning Signs: Early Detection Matters." For more information, call (302) 854-9788.
