The Third Annual Dewey Goes Pink 5K, held in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 5, raised $46,000 this year for the Barbara “Gugie” Montgomery Memorial Fund for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.
Montgomery was diagnosed with breast cancer at 50, surviving for 25 years after the diagnosis.
“My mother worked extremely hard to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer,” said her son, Steve Montgomery, in a press release. “She was very proud of the advances made in this fight throughout her 25-year battle. Being a local businessman in Sussex County, it made sense for me to continue her work by using our establishments to host fundraising events to support our community. With the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, all of the money raised stays right her in Delaware, and helps those who support our restarants.”
The donation check was presented to DBCC on Nov. 19 at Starboard in Dewey Beach. For more information about DBCC, visit www.debreastcancer.org.
