  • A 44-year-old Seaford man was arrested Dec. 24 after he reportedly led police on an hour-and-a-half pursuit in a stolen tractor trailer.
According to the Delaware State Police, troopers were called to Mike’s Clearance Center on Sussex Highway in Delmar around 2:50 a.m. after a neighbor observed a 2013 Peterbilt 10-wheeled day cab tractor trailer operated by Christopher N. Cornish had backed into the door of a shed on the property. Police said Cornish drove off in the truck before troopers arrived, but was followed by the witness who gave up-to-date information on the truck’s location. Police said Cornish fled into Salisbury, Md. but returned to Delaware traveling north on U.S. Route 13, at one point heading northbound in the southbound lanes just outside of Seaford. Police said the truck, at this point operating on flat tires due to Stop Stick devices deployed by police in Maryland, continued in an attempt to elude police at speeds less than 40 miles per hour. Police said Cornish made a U-turn on Garden Lane and began heading southbound on U.S. Route 13 before entering into Seaford city limits where the vehicle came to a stop behind McDonald’s. Cornish was taken into custody without further incident.
Police said further investigation revealed the tractor trailer had been stolen the night of Dec. 23 from Seaford Concrete on Coverdale Road in Bridgeville. Police said Cornish drove the truck to Delmar for the purposes of attempting to steal a vehicle stored in a shed at Mike’s Clearance Center.
Police said Cornish will be charged with theft of a motor vehicle, third degree attempted burglary, two counts of criminal mischief and various traffic offenses on a later date. Law enforcement agencies in Maryland may also file charges. For now, he’s been committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $40,000 cash bond on four outstanding warrants for violation of probation.
Police said Cornish is also wanted out of Troop 5 in Bridgeville for incidents that occurred in early November and mid-December that carry charges of receiving stolen property, theft and traffic violations. Cornish is also wanted out of the Harrington, Bridgeville and Seaford police departments for various offenses.
