A 25-year-old Newark man died March 18 in an accident involving a dump truck on Delaware Route 1 in Milton.

According to the Delaware State Police, the crash occurred around 2:15 p.m. as Daniel J. Murray was operating a 1996 Nissan Maxima southbound on Route 1 in the left lane approaching the intersection with Delaware Route 16. Police said a 1993 Ford Aeromax LTL 9000 dump truck hauling a backhoe on a flatbed trailer was stopped for a red light in the northbound left lane, waiting to turn westbound onto Route 16. When the traffic signal for the northbound left turn lane turned green, police said the dump truck entered into the intersection. At the same time, police said Murray failed to stop for the southbound red light and struck the truck in the right front corner causing the Nissan to spin counter clockwise and continue in a westerly direction before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Route 16. Police said the dump truck and trailer came to a controlled stop in the intersection.

Murray, who was properly restrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. The operator of the truck, 54-year-old Alvin E. Mast of Greenwood, was properly restrained and was not injured in the collision.

Police said the investigation into this crash is ongoing. Route 1 southbound at Route 16 was closed for about two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
