  • A 16-year-old Milton girl led police on a short pursuit on April 7 through Lewes and Rehoboth Beach.
According to the Delaware State Police, the incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. as a trooper on patrol in the area of Del. Route 1 and Dartmouth Road in Lewes observed a silver Chevrolet Impala driving erratically. The trooper reportedly attempted to initiate a traffic stop just south of Dartmouth Road when the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed and began making abrupt lane changes. Police said the vehicle then made a sudden U-turn and began traveling northbound in the southbound lanes before crossing the center median north of Bay Vista Road where it continued northbound in the correct lanes. Troopers reportedly continued to follow the vehicle which began utilizing the bus travel lanes until a front tire blew out, causing the vehicle to come to a controlled stop.
Police said the girl, who has not been identified because she’s a minor, was immediately taken into custody and was transported to Troop 7 in Lewes. Police said a DUI investigation ensued and the girl was charged with driving under the influence, disregarding a police officer signal, driving was suspended and revoked and various other moving violations. She was also charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle after it was determined she did not have permission from her parent to drive the car. She was committed to Stevenson House Detention Center in Milford on $3,041 bond.
