The Milton Historical Society will host a bus trip to Homewood and Evergreen museums in Baltimore on Tuesday, May 4. The trip includes transportation and lunch at Gertrude’s — a John Shield’s restaurant at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The deadline for registration is April 26.

Homewood Museum offers visitors the chance to explore diverse interests in tremendous depth and provides an intimate look at life in early-19th-century Baltimore. The museum’s collections consist of fine and decorative arts objects representative of the furnishings during the Carroll family’s occupancy (1775-1825).

Some works have direct affiliation with the Carroll family. The majority of the collection is American, with a strong concentration in high-quality Baltimore furniture of the period. English ceramics, silver, and furniture, as well as items of Chinese and French manufacture, are reflective of the imports available in early-19th century Baltimore. Tour of the home begins at 10:45 a.m.

Following lunch, guests will enjoy a tour of a Gilded Age mansion surrounded by Italian-style gardens. Evergreen Museum and Library is at once an intimate collection of fine and decorative arts, rare books and manuscripts assembled by two generations of the philanthropic Garrett family, and a vibrant, inspirational venue for contemporary artists. In the mid-19th century, when railroads were king, Baltimore’s Garrett family ruled the rails.

Their 48-room home for two generations (1878-1942) is a superb example of Gilded Age architecture on the National Register of Historic Places.

The bus will depart from the Milton Historical Society at 8 a.m. and leaves Baltimore at 4:15 p.m. The cost of the trip is $55 for Society Volunteers and Members and $65 for Non-Members. Price includes transportation, admittance to both locations and lunch. Lunch will be a 3 course luncheon menu at Gertrude’s — a John Shields Restaurant at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Please call 302-684-1010 for credit card reservations or any questions.

A sign-up form is available on the MHS website (www.historicmilton.org) or mail a check payable to the Milton Historical Society, PO Box 112, Milton, DE 19968. Please note that money will only be refunded if the entire trip is cancelled or there is waiting list availability.
