At 8 p.m. on April 10, the historic Milton Theater will be alive with “A Night of American Music,” a celebration of original and cover tunes performed by a variety of renowned musicians who collectively capture the history of some of the country’s musical styles and songs.
From the folk/country inspired songs of the acoustic trio, MuleTrain, whose music is influenced by the likes of Levon Helm, Bob Dylan and John Prine to the gospel-music inspired “Reminders” (Ed Shockley, Kevin Short and John Thompson), to sultry-voiced Billie Stevens-Carlins with her breath-stopping renditions of such classics as “Summertime,” to the fun-loving sassy, “Charity Case,’ (Amy Felker and Stuart Vining) whose repertoire includes songs from Emmylou Harris, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, The Doors, even Elvis Presley, “A Night of American Music” promises to be all the things you want listening to good music to be: inspiring, romantic, nostalgic, exciting and just good fun,” says Kent Schoch, the musician who has organized the event.
Schoch, who has been playing music most of his life and is currently working on his second CD, came up with the idea for a “Night of American Music” in an attempt to bring together songwriters and performers from various musical genres who often don’t have the opportunity to share a stage together. Individually these musicians have accomplished wonderful things, he says. They’ve had entire careers in Nashville, written and produced all kinds of music, performed with and for some of the country’s top artists, received awards, written famous songs, recorded and produced all kinds of music in all kinds of styles. Collectively, they represent a lifetime of music, the best of American Music. “I wanted to bring all that together—to celebrate the incredible talent we have here in Delmarva, but to celebrate, too, the incredible music that has marked our lives, our histories, our memories.
Tickets for a “Night of American Music” are available at the Milton Theater and cost $18 ($15 for seniors and students). Tickets are also available at the Lewes Bake Shop and will be available at Rehoboth Beach Writers’ Guild Free writes! and Nights of Song and Stories.
