As the Milton Theatre expands its programming, more effort is being made to help bring young residents and visiting children to enjoy the annual Theatre Camp in Milton. Children of all levels of experience or no experience at all are welcome to join in the adventure.
Partnerships have been formed with the professional staff members of the “Summer Institute for the Theatre Arts”, “ Children's Musical Theatre Camp” and the “Delaware Comedy Theatre.” The Camp offers a wide variety of programs for young artists ages 4 through 18 during July 2010.
The classes will concentrate on exploring theatre experiences as they support the expansion of each child’s creativity and imagination, help develop personal confidence, learn to handle new experiences and new people, as well as acquiring real theatre skills to reach personal performance goals. There is a showcase on stage at the historic Milton Theatre on the last day of each session..
New to the Milton Theatre Camp are Martha and Paul Pfeiffer of the Summer Institute for the Arts. This dynamic team will teach the first session of Camp, July 5-9. Martha Pfeiffer, sixth-grade teacher at Mariner Middle School, will guide students ages 11-14 during her morning half-day session 9 a. She will concentrate on acting, singing and dancing for musical theatre. Students, regardless of experience, will enjoy working on group and solo performances and learning and refining new theatre performance skills in a non-competitive environment. Cost is $125.
Dr. Paul Pfeiffer, seasoned actor, university professor and Chairman of the Drama Department at Salisbury University will share his professional expertise with those young artists who want to learn how to handle Shakespearean dialect and classical theatre movement. Under Dr. Pfeiffer’s expert hand, interested students, ages 12 through 18, at every level of experience, will have the rare opportunity to do scene studies to make both Shakespeare and classical theatre come alive. Those ready for a unique theatre adventure are invited to attend this afternoon class from 1-4 p.m. Cost is $125.
The Milton Theatre has invited Janet Layden and Cathy Layden-Jansen of the Children’s Musical Theatre Camp join the Camp staff.. Janet, with her assistant Cathy, has had over 25 years experience as owner and artistic director of a landmark school in Brooklyn, New York and a performing arts academy on the Jersey Shore., Her experience comes from the world of dance and education, combining fun with solid technique, a variety of dance styles, motivation and learning life-long skills. From uly 12-16, this all day session, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., takes place in a nurturing and happy environment. Janet and Cathy have a passionate commitment to the creative experience; together they guide students, ages 7 through 12 as they explore dance, movement and acting for musical theatre. Cost is $200.
Something magical happens on Monday July 26 and ends with a crowning ceremony on Friday July 30. Janet Layden, who has a love of working with very young children, will offer Prince and Princess Camp to children ages 4-7 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Children will create their own “royal stories” through exploring dance and acting. All materials for take home creative arts and crafts projects to are included. Cost $125.
The last week of camp, July 26-30, brings David Warick, creative founder and director of the popular improvisation troupe, Delaware Comedy Theatre as a new addition to the Camp staff. Warick is also the drama and theatre arts teacher at Southern Delaware School of the Arts. During this afternoon class, from 1-4 p.m., Warick will teach improvisation games and techniques and “theatre sports.”
Students will learn play off each other’s creative ideas and work together. This is a perfect program for students who want the challenge of learning to “think on their feet” and be funny! Cost is $125.
