Henry Woronicz’s adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy “The Miser,” entitled “Stinkin’ ‘Rich,” will open June 12-14 at Possum Point Theater, in Georgetown.
The re-telling is set in 1929, in New York City’s Jazz Age. A student and teacher of classical theatre, Woronicz has been able to be in direct contact with director Nina Galerstein of Millsboro. “Mostly, the really cool thing is that he has been available to me, by phone, to discuss various aspects of the play,” said Galerstein, “We intend to do a webcam thing with him so he can meet the cast and perhaps even view/critique a scene from the play.”
Woronicz has worked in many different theatrical arenas, from director to artistic director, and has many acting credits from Broadway to TV. With a background that includes playing Macbeth in Macbeth and Hamlet in Hamlet, as well as guest starring in shows as diverse as Ally McBeal and Star Trek (Voyager and TNG), plus recurring roles in Seinfeld and Moesha, it should be no surprise that his writing style takes a classic work and brings it into a more modern era.
This hilarious comedy tells the tale of Harper – a “modern” miser played by Doug Friend – and his schemes to make even more money through marrying-off his children advantageously. Unfortunately for Harper, his children – daughter Alice played by Sierra Spicer of Laurel and son Clayton played by Peyton Lynch of Georgetown – have their own ideas for how best to take advantage of their father’s wealth. The way everyone’s separate purposes cross and confuse is a cause for much laughter.
The cast also includes Jay Collier of Berlin as Valentine, Pat Erhardt of Seaford as Jacque, Lauren Henry as Felicity, Kim Klabe of Rehoboth Beach as Rose, and Mike Mahaffie of Lewes as Simon.
“Get your tickets now,” recommends Galerstein, “We’re going to have a drawing at every performance for a back-stage tour and a ‘Stinkin’ Rich goodie bag’ that will include, among other things, tickets to An Inspector Calls.” An Inspector Calls will be performed at Possum Point Players in October.
Performances of Stinkin’ Rich are June 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 8 p.m. and on June 14 and 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are now available for $18 ($17 for Seniors or students) by calling the Possum Ticketline at 302-856-4560. Directions to Possum Hall are also available at the ticketline number. Possum Point Players is sponsored in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts.
