CENTRAL SUSSEX -

Wings & Wheels 2008 will make its debut on Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Sussex County Airport in Georgetown.

The Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Delaware Aviation Museum, will host this unique event which will feature a “fly in” of more than 30 jets and vintage planes, and an auto car show with hundreds of classic cars and roadsters on display. Admission is free.

Food and craft vendors will be setting up, and civil war re-enactments are scheduled throughout the day, as well. Festival goers will also enjoy a family-fun day filled with great entertainment provided by DJs, “Sky Brady” and Tony Windsor; local singer, Cathy Gorman; and headlining the event, the enormously popular band, The Funsters.  CAT Country will be broadcasting live from the airport from 11-1, with giveaways, games and prizes to be won by kids of all ages.

“Fly in” operations chief and pilot, Larry Kelley reported  there is a Yak-9 WWII Russian fighter, P-51 Mustang, P-40 Warhawk, F4U Corsair, TBM Avenger, L-39 jet, possibly a Harrier,   T-6 Texan, L-16, PT-26, Yak-52, CJ-6, B-25J, PT-17, as well as, many classic and vintage aircraft, light sport and ultralight aircraft scheduled to appear. Rides for purchase are available, and proceeds benefit the non profit, 501 (C)(3) Delaware Aviation Museum Foundation. The auto show is hosted by the Lower Delaware Mustang Club, and registration is $10.00 per car. Dash plaques will be distributed to the first 100 cars, and 50 trophies will be awarded to winning participants, with one Best in Show.

Current event sponsors include Southern Delaware Tourism, Town of Georgetown, Sussex County Council, Perdue Farms, Delmarva Power, Holland Jewelers, Sharp Energy, Fisher Auto Parts, The Insurance Market, First State Chevy Olds, Wal-Mart, Sussex Post, The Leader & State Register, Moors Disposal Services, Waste Management, Daisey’s Used Cars and CAT Country.

According to Georgetown Chamber executive director, Karen Duffield, the Wings & Wheel 2008 Fall Festival is the first in what is hoped to become an annual event and eventually, a Georgetown tradition. 

“Come and join us,” Duffield says. “We’re going to be seeing some amazing flying and driving machines at the Festival, and having a whole lot of fun on Oct. 25.”
