The fire truck blew its horn and almost instantly motorcycles and cars pulled into The Circle to escort Nicholas Romano home.
Standing on the porch of The Brick Hotel, several friends of the Romano family waved American flags and cheered for the small parade bringing Romano from the Philadelphia airport to his parents’ home in Georgetown.
For the onlookers it was over in an instant. And, it felt like a whirlwind for Romano. But, for his family and friends the trip from saying goodbye to Romano last year to welcoming him home this past weekend seemed never-ending at times.
“We’re just really happy to have him home,” said Denise Romano, Nick’s mother.
Lance Corporal Nicholas Romano serves with the United States Marines and has since shortly after graduating from Cape Henlopen High School in 2007. He served his first tour of duty in Iraq from 2008 to 2009. Then he shipped out shortly after to serve another tour – this time in Afghanistan.
He will spend three weeks home with his family before returning to his home base in Hawaii. Romano said he is glad to be home and is currently considering re-enlisting for a third tour.
