The Delaware State Police are providing additional details surrounding the crash earlier this morning. A patrol trooper assigned to Troop 4 in Georgetown had conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 113 northbound for a registration violation.
The trooper, who is in his first year of service with the state police, stopped a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser, operated by Cindy Usilton, 51 of Millsboro, for a registration violation. During the traffic stop, the trooper parked his fully marked 2005 Ford Crown Victoria police car with all emergency equipment activated, on the shoulder behind the PT Cruiser.
As the trooper was outside the vehicle on the passenger side of the PT Cruiser, a 1982 Chevy S-10 pick-up, operated by Lynn R. Brice, 42 of Georgetown, was travelling northbound on U.S. 113 approaching the scene. For an unknown reason the pick-up veered off the roadway and struck the rear of the patrol vehicle. This caused the police car to move forward striking the PT Cruiser.
As a result of the crash, Mr. Brice sustained non-life threatening injuries and was flown to Christiana Hospital by DSP helicopter. The trooper and Usilton were not injured. Seatbelt use and alcohol is currently unknown on behalf of Mr. Brice. The roadway was closed for approximately 1 1/2 hours and has since been reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
