Most people love to collect things.  Books, magazines, art, or baseball cards – the thought of walking into an antiques store and finding that missing or rare piece is an irresistible urge to many.

On Friday March 19, members of The Lewes Historical Society will share with the community their passion and the things they collect.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Lewes Presbyterian Church Hall, on Kings Highway; free off-street parking is available from Franklin Avenue.

Peggy Sherow, who has been a member of the Society since 1972, will share just one of her collections – her impressive collection of samplers, including several she made.

Sherow’s sampler collection occupies two walls and a few shelves in her house, the oldest from the 1800s. She likes to rescue samplers as well, reframing them properly and enjoying their intricate stitch work. Louise Archdeacon will also present items from her sampler collection, including one made in Germany by her grandmother.

Jean Gray will be joining the discussion and sharing her large collection of quilts, with the oldest at over 100 years.Thelma Hiemstra will be showing her teapot collection, acquired steadily over her 89 years.

Society president Fran Richmann will also be displaying a collection – her vast assortment of cat art, in many media. In particular, Fran will be sharing some of the more interesting items from her collection as well as pieces made by Lewes artists Bert Long, Pat Staby and others. All collectors are welcome to come with questions. The program is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
