The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) and its Board of Trustees proudly present Southern Lights of Life: An Evening of Living and Giving with special guest of honor and breast cancer survivor Delaware’s First Lady Carla Markell, on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Dover Downs Hotel & Conference Center.
Now in its seventh year, "Southern Lights of Life" - chaired this year by Dr. Michele Domenick of Bayhealth Medical Center - is the area’s premier breast cancer fundraising event and a celebration of the lives and courage of all breast cancer survivors. Proceeds from the event stay local to support ongoing DBCC programs and services for the early detection, treatment, and research into the causes of breast cancer for the people of Delaware and its neighboring communities.
“Everyone knows someone who has or has had breast cancer,” said event co-chair Susan Chinnici of Dover, “and this event is a fun and uplifting way for them to feel good about helping by supporting an organization that does so much for so many people.”
Okemah Strickland, event co-chair and owner of Okemah’s Cut Above in Dover, tells of exciting new changes this year that make the evening evermore inviting. “We’ve moved the event to Saturday night so that people don’t have to rush to get ready after work Friday night,” she said.
“And the set up, with silent auction items interspersed throughout the main area, will be more conducive to socializing, eating and drinking while keeping an eye on the items you’re bidding on as you feel the energy and excitement build!”
Heavy hors d’oeuvres, lavish gourmet food stations, an open bar, and a “dessert extravaganza” are sure to satiate any appetite, and Live and Silent Auction items include a vast array of enticing items from vacation packages, a Wilderness Dinner for Eight complete with limousine service, artwork, jewelry, autographed sports memorabilia, spa packages, baskets with designer handbags, sunglasses and more from Gucci, Kate Spade and others, and so much more, and big-ticket electronic items have been generously donated by Best Buy stores of Delaware for raffle drawings. The live auction items will be presented by breast cancer survivors.
The real highlight of the evening, however, is a breathtaking fashion show in which all of the models are breast cancer survivors who are the embodiment of life and beauty after a breast cancer diagnosis.
