Delaware’s Division of Public Health (DPH), in partnership with HIV/AIDS service providers within the community, will observe World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. The observance recognizes the many lives saved by HIV prevention and treatment programs and draws attention to the need for greater commitment to make services available to all. Globally, less than half of those in need of antiretroviral therapy are receiving it and too many do not have access to adequate care and services.
The CDC estimates that 1.1 million people are living with HIV in the United States. This number will likely increase over time as antiretroviral drug treatments extend the lives of those with HIV and more people become infected. Here in Delaware, 3,470 people are living with HIV/AIDS and approximately 77 people lost their lives to AIDS from 2004-'08.
Dr. Karyl Rattay, DPH director, urged Delawareans to get tested. She said, “The benefits of early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infection are enormous, reducing viral load and maintaining individual health.”
World AIDS Day galvanizes communities to come together to demonstrate the importance of HIV/AIDS and show support for the cause. In addition to getting tested, DPH encourages Delawareans to get involved through leadership discussions, marches, public awareness events as well as making a personal commitment to protect their partners and encourage others to do the same.
HIV/AIDS activists across the world and in the United States are organizing special events to increase awareness and remind people there is still a lot to be done. Events will be held at several locations in Delaware. Those interested should call the following for specific event locations.
