Sussex County officials are asking residents and property owners with damage caused by this past weekend’s snowstorm to report that information immediately so emergency planners can assess the extent of destruction wrought on the region.
Due to inclement weather, all schools in the Indian River (IRSD), Sussex Tech and Cape Henlopen districts, as well as Delmarva Christian High School, will be closed on Tuesday. Feb. 9.
As power crews continue moving from site to site throughout Sussex, there are still quite a few pockets of residents without electricity following the weekend blizzard. With more snow, and possibly sleet and rain, in the forecast for Delaware starting Tuesday and going into Wednesday, emergency management officials are urging residents to clear snow from exhaust vents, downspouts and roofs, particularly flat roofs.
The Delaware Emergency Management Agency is reminding drivers to fully clean snow off their cars to avoid obstructed views while driving, and to exercise caution around large snow piles near the roadway.
Operation Arctic Vengeance, Delaware National Guard's response to the winter storm this weekend, now consists of 288 personnel working in shifts around the clock. Seventy-five military vehicles are being used to assist the citizens of Delaware, with efforts focused primarily in Sussex.
Sussex County officials reported approximately 15,000 residents without power early Sunday a morning, a number they said is steadily decreasing as power crews continue working. In the interim, shelters are open for powerless residents at Sussex Central, Cape Henlopen and Milford high schools.
Crews from the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) are creating teams with the National Guard. DelDOT crews will not only provide a plowed path to people’s homes who have called for transport to shelters, but also provide the local knowledge of the best route to get to a certain home or neighborhood.
The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) radar shows the massive snowstorm blanketing the state beginning to move out around 7 p.m. on Feb. 6. A state of emergency remains in effect, but the state driving restriction will be lifted at 8 p.m. Saturday night. Road crews in Sussex will take a break at 11:30 p.m. and resume plowing early Sunday morning.

A spokeswoman for Gov. Jack Markell said TV reports of the governor having declared a state of emergency in Delaware were unfounded... until around 5:30 p.m., when Markell's office declared a state of emergency as of 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. Vehicles have been ordered off the roads as of 10 p.m.

Due to the impending snow storm, Sussex County’s three county-owned libraries will close at 5 p.m. today. South Coastal in Bethany Beach, Milton and Greenwood libraries are affected by the closure. Independent community libraries operate on their own schedule and are not affected by this decision.
