Bethany Beach will host the week-long Poseidon Festival from May 27 through June 1.

The festival will include a variety of ocean-inspired entertainment and theme nights at the bandstand and Nature Center, 807 Garfield Parkway, while addressing potential emergency-related concerns. They will be distributing emergency preparedness booklets, while supplies last.

A Caribbean Carnival kickoff will begin at 5 p.m. May 27 on the bandstand featuring steel drum duo Island Fusion, with interactive drum circle by Nancy the Drum Lady at 6 p.m. and a concert by Baltimore’s Trinidad and Tobago Steel Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Attendees can take part in a limbo contest, conga line or mini tour of the town’s Mobile Command Center and water-rescue vehicles.

Lifeguards, police officers, firemen and representatives of the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center will discuss ocean safety and answer questions.

From 10 a.m. to noon May 27, the Nature Center will have a book signing and story time by Nancy Sakaduski, author of “The Mermaid in Rehoboth Bay.” Sakaduski will make mermaid crowns with families, and anyone who dresses like their favorite sea creature will get a prize. There will also be a Mermaid Scavenger Hunt and Mermaid scratch art.

Patriotic Night, May 28, will feature the U.S. Navy Cruisers Band. The group plays genres of music ranging from jazz and standards, rhythm and blues, classic rock, adult contemporary and pop. The town’s Mobile Command Center and emergency personnel will be on-site.

The festival will take a break May 29 in honor of Memorial Day, but will return May 30 for Pirate Night. At 6 p.m. on the bandstand, a troupe of roving pirates from Pyrates of the Coast will present an interactive show on water safety wrapped around a theme of “pirate history vs. Hollywood.” All are encouraged to dress in pirate attire for the Pirate Costume Contest. The group will stick around for photos and to judge the contest. At 7:30 p.m., a preview of the movie “Hook” will be shown on the beach off Garfield Parkway.

Mermaid Night is May 31. At 6 p.m. on the beach, RELYance Skim Camp will demonstrate skimboarding basics, etiquette and safety. At 7 p.m., the mermaid parade will take over the Bandstand Plaza. Sons of Pirates will play rock tunes at 7:30 p.m.

Key West will come to Bethany Beach on June 1 with Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band Parrotbeach.
