DUI charge for Newark man

Delaware State Police are investigating a car crash that took place on Coastal Highway (Route 1), south of the Indian River Inlet, and sent three people to the hospital.

The incident occurred around 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, on Coastal Highway southbound in the area of Water's Edge Way, Bethany Beach. A 2004 F-150 operated by a 61-year-old Selbyville man had just made a u-turn from Coastal Highway northbound and established his vehicle in the lane of travel. A 2012 Ford F-250 operated by 23-year-old James I. Windle, of Newark, was also traveling southbound on Coastal Highway at an apparent high rate of speed.

Windle's vehicle struck the rear of the F-150 and both vehicles overturned before coming to rest.

The operator of the F-150, Windle and his 23-year-old female passenger, all of whom were properly restrained, were treated and released from Beebe Healthcare with minor injuries.

Windle was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and following too close before being released, pending a future court appearance.

The southbound lanes of Coastal Highway were closed or restricted for about two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
