Melissa York, a progressive care unit nurse at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus, is the recent recipient of the DAISY Award at Bayhealth.

York is less than a year into her nursing career, but she’s already making a difference to her patients. One family called her “a gem” when nominating her for the award.

“You don’t always realize that people are appreciative of what you do. This shows they cared about me as much as I cared about them,” said York. “I love what I do, and I know everyone says that, but I really love what I do. It’s definitely hard sometimes but if I can affect one person’s day and make a difference, that’s worth it for me. I’ll never forget caring for that family and I’m grateful they thought of me.”

The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. DAISY Award honorees are chosen by nurses, administrators, peers, physicians, volunteers, patients and family.
