The staff and students of Sussex Technical High School will stage the Broadway smash "Ragtime" in March.
This is Sussex Tech’s first venture into a musical production and the school is alive with the sights and sounds from the show.
It will be presented to the public at Delaware Technical and Community College Theater in Georgetown on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 with a ticket price of $8 each. Thursday, March 4, has been reserved for a performance for the staff and students of Sussex Tech and features a special pricing of $5. All shows begin at 7 p.m. and tickets may be purchased at the door.
Dedicated students are integral to the creation of the choreography, vocal sounds, and stage movement for Ragtime. As one would expect from a technical high school, the students are the primary resource for the design, construction, and application of all of the technical aspects of the show. The show is directed by Jim DeBastiani.
Performed entirely by students, Ragtime School Edition, is a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America. According to its website, the musical intertwines the stories of three extraordinary families as they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America. Musical styles in the production include ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, bold brass band marches, waltzes, banjo tunes, parlor songs and expansive anthems.
Based on the novel Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, it is taken from the book by Terrence McNally with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.
The public is invited to enjoy either the Friday or Saturday performances.
