High school seniors wishing to further their interest in journalism or creative writing are eligible to apply for the $1,000 Jim Cresson Memorial Fund scholarship.

Each year, the fund provides $1,000 cash scholarship to a Sussex County senior to be used for educational expenses such as tuition, room and board, books or computer equipment.

To enter, graduating Sussex County high school seniors must submit a 750-1,000 word essay on one of the following five topics by Wednesday, March 31.

Possible topics include:
• My outdoor/environmental experiences in Sussex County
• What pet animals have meant to me
• My most memorable Sussex County characters
• What the U.S. military means to me
• Sussex County Native Americans.

A Vietnam vet and journalist for the Cape Gazette, Cresson also loved the outdoors, animals, children and had a profound compassion for Delaware’s Native Americans. Cresson died in 2005 as a result of automobile accident. Friends established this fund to honor and remember him.

Essays must be postmarked by March 31 and mailed to Jim Cresson Fund, c/o the Greater Lewes Foundation, PO Box 110, Lewes, DE, 19958.  The winner will be notified in mid-May and the winning essay will be printed in the Cape Gazette.
