East Millsboro Elementary School can boast its Teacher of the Year, Heather Moore, who was chosen from a pool of 15 candidates and announced as the winner at the Teacher of the Year ceremony held April 23 at Sussex Central High School.
“It’s such a great honor to represent Indian River [School District],” Moore said as she tried to contain her tears at the ceremony. “I enjoy teaching – I’m here for the kids.”
Each year, one teacher from each of the Indian River schools is nominated for Teacher of the Year. The winner, announced in the spring, represents the district the following school year at various conferences and events. As this year’s winner, Moore will receive a laptop and laser printer to use next year, as well as a small gift from each school.
Moore has been a third grade teacher at East Millsboro since 2003. Prior to teaching there, she taught kindergarten, first, second, third and fifth grade students at Long Neck Elementary School from 1999-2003. She joined the district in April 1999 as a long-term substitute teacher.
Moore is a 1995 graduate of Sussex Central High School, has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Salisbury University and a master’s in Applied Educational Technology and School Leadership & Instruction from Wilmington College.
Moore serves on the school’s leadership and language arts committees, is a mentor for the district and has conducted SmartBoard training workshops for her fellow teachers. She has been a teacher in the district’s Bridges summer school program since 2000 and has participated in East Millsboro’s after-school program for the past six years. She is a member of the Historical Society of Delaware Teacher Advisory Committee and the school’s PTO.
Moore is now eligible for State Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in October.
