Delaware State Police have reported the death of a 58-year-old Georgetown man, the result of a two-vehicle crash east of Bridgeville at the intersection of Redden and Chaplin’s Chapel Roads.

The crash happened Sunday, just after 4 p.m., when Greenwood resident Abigail J. Carmean, 26, was driving her Ford Explorer south on Chaplin’s Chapel Road and entered the Redden Road intersection, where she was struck by a Mercury Millena. After the impact, both vehicles burst into flames.

According to police, preliminary investigation indicates that Carmean failed to stop at a stop sign before entering the intersection.

A good samaritan, later identified as John A. Baynum, stopped and began pulling occupants out of the vehicles. A 48-year-old woman was pulled from the Mercury and flown to Christiana Hospital, where she was admitted in critical condition with severe internal injuries. A 20-year-old Lewes man was also pulled from the wreckage and was flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma in critical condition with a closed head injury.

Baynum also pulled Carmean and her two children from the wreckage, Carmean was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital and admitted with a lacerated liver and broken back, her 8-month-old daughter was also admitted to Milford Memorial and was released with minor cuts and contusions, while her 4-year-old son was flown to A.I. duPont Hospital and admitted for head and left arm injuries.

All occupants were wearing their seatbelts, the infant was properly secured in a child seat and the investigation is on going.

Police have not released the name of the deceased Georgetown man.
