Sussex Central High School has a lot to be excited about and proud of right now.  Not only was the high school recently rated as a superior school by the Delaware Department of Education, but Assistant Principal Richard Evans was also recently named Delaware’s Secondary Assistant Principal of the Year.

According to the Delaware Association of School Administrators, this award is designed to recognize the “outstanding leadership of active, front-line assistant principals.”

And, according to Susan Bunting, the Indian River School District Superintendent, Evans has a lot to do with the superior rating.

“If you’ve followed Sussex Central’s history over the past couple of years, they were a school listed for school improvement and Rick has been s steadying force there,” Bunting said.

Bunting, who nominated Evans for the award, thought that he deserved some recognition for his work over the last several years with parents, staff, and students.

“He does an outstanding job,” Bunting said. “He’s an all-around successful assistant principal for us and I’m delighted that he won.  It’s well-earned.”

Principal Jay Owens agreed with Bunting that Evans deserves recognition adding that Evans is a tremendous resource who’s professional and knowledgeable about the inner workings of a school and the way life is in a high school.

“Sometimes when you work with somebody day in and day out, you forget to really acknowledge all the great things they’re doing,” Principal Owens said. “But, I can tell you that I learn from him everyday. I’m constantly bouncing ideas off of him and he’s giving me great ideas that are beneficial to the school.”

While describing his days and his duties as one of four assistant principals, Evans explained that he enjoys his role an administrator who gets to deal with teachers and students in the classrooms rather than having to focus solely on disciplinary issues.

“I enjoy going into the classroom,” Evans said. “You get to see the kids be involved in the learning process and you get to see that they’re engaged and doing what they need to do.”

Evans added that it helps that the majority of Sussex Central students are doing the right thing by not getting in trouble but rather contributing in the classroom and learning as much as possible.
“A lot of times, I’m just observing in the classroom but we also talk to the kids,” Evans said. “And, when it fits, you can have a conversation and have them explain to you what they’re doing which shows that they’re learning.  If they can tell you, then, they have a pretty good handle of what’s going on.”

Evans has personally watched several students transition from middle school to high school and from adolescent to adult. He said that it’s important to him to get to see this development and watch as the students become productive citizens and valuable contributors to society.

“Those eighth graders who were there with me at Millsboro Middle School are eleventh graders now so I’ve gotten to see certain kids over a four year period really grow up and mature,” Evans said. “That’s something nice about high school.  You get to see the finished product.”

Evans will represent Delaware as the nominee for the 2012 National Assistant Principal of the Year award in Washington, D.C., in April 2012.
