The Kimmeytown incident that claimed the life of Georgetown Ptlm. Chad Spicer is the first police shooting since 1972 to occur in Delaware.

The state's last line-of-duty death was in 2004, when Cpl. Christopher Shea was killed in an automobile crash with a drunk driver.

But according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, police shootings in Delaware are very rare. Only Vermont (33) and New Hampshire (19) have had fewer than Delaware (34).

The last Delaware officer to die in the line of duty from a gunshot wound was Dover Ptlm. Daniel Schneible, who was shot in 1969 and passed away due to complications from the wound in 1993. In '72, state troopers David Yarrington and Ronald Carey were killed by a female suspect with whom they were struggling.
