Sussex County Council could soon include a former Georgetown mayor.
Former mayors Bob Ricker (R) and Mike Wyatt (D) both filed on Tuesday to run for the county’s second councilmanic district, after incumbent Finley Jones announced he would not seek re-election.
“I know everybody running for council says they love Sussex, but I deeply believe Sussex County is the best place on Earth to live,” Ricker said of his decision to run. “It’s unique and we need to keep it that way.”
“I’ve served the community in Georgetown for 11 years and really enjoyed myself,” Wyatt said. “I think the current council has done a good job…I just want to keep things going.”
Ricker served as Georgetown’s mayor from 1999 to 2003, and Wyatt served from 2004 until this May.
Currently on the Georgetown Town Council, Ricker has also served on the planning commission and is the Delaware Fire Commissioner. He owns Baker’s True Value hardware store in Millsboro and serves with the Georgetown Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to serving on Georgetown Town Council, Wyatt has spent more than a decade on the Little League Board, attends the Lewes Church of Christ, and was on the Pop Warner board for four years. He has spent 35 years with the Pilots Association in Lewes and owns MM Auto Sales in Georgetown.
Ricker and Wyatt were the only two candidates to file for the second district seat as of press time. The filing deadline is Friday at noon.
Either way, both candidates expect a clean campaign.
“Bob and I have been friends for a while, and we’ll walk out of this as friends,” Wyatt said.
