The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance has issued its 2007 “State of the Nanticoke River Watershed” report.

The annual report uses important water quality data that has been collected by volunteers throughout the Nanticoke’s river system.  “Creekwatchers,” as they are called, act as citizen scientists by testing for water clarity, oxygen levels, and other important measurements of water quality.  They also collect samples to be tested for nutrient, bacteria and chlorophyll levels.  Envirocorp Labs in Harrington, Delaware generously donates all nutrient and bacteria analysis.

The NWA’s 2007 report, summarizing efforts of the first year, will act as a measuring tool for the future.  As changes in land use occur within the watershed (the area of land that drains into the Nanticoke River), water quality may reflect these changes.  NWA will use its annual report to identify important areas for restoration and conservation, thereby protecting the precious resources of the Nanticoke River.

It is available on the web at www.nanticokeriver.org and by request at 410-873-3045.

“There is good news – it seems that the Nanticoke River can presently live up to its reputation as one of the most pristine rivers feeding into the Chesapeake Bay,” said Megan Ward, Program Coordinator for the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance.  “But increases in nutrient and sediment pollution caused by land use changes and growing populations could degrade the Nanticoke’s water quality.  NWA’s restoration efforts, including a close watch on water quality, will help to ensure that this river will remain among the most pristine.”

The 2007 “State of the Nanticoke River Watershed” report found that the Nanticoke River was generally at or better then minimum standards set by Maryland and Delaware regulatory agencies.  In particular, oxygen levels were high enough to support the fish community and nutrient levels were reasonable but could be improved.  Bacteria levels throughout the watershed were generally high.  As compared to other rivers of the Chesapeake Bay, NWA is glad to report that the Nanticoke River is relatively healthy.

The Nanticoke Watershed Alliance is a consortium of 45 diverse member organizations from Delaware and Maryland representing environmental groups, government agencies, land trusts, realtors, scientists, educators, fishermen, restoration groups, farmers, and citizen groups. The mission of the alliance is to conserve the natural, cultural, and recreational resources of the Nanticoke River.
