Bennie Smith Funeral Homes has become one of over 700 family owned funeral homes in 45 states certified as a Veterans & Family memorial Care Provider (VMFC), joining in the tradition of a rich heritage of funeral service providers that honor and pay tribute to veterans. Combined, these providers have arranged for tens of thousands of interments at VA National & State Cemeteries nationwide.
VFMC Providers extend benefits and savings to Veterans and their spouses beyond those provided by the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs. This includes encouraging Veterans and their spouses to take full advantage of their free veteran’s burial benefit in the closest State or National Veterans Cemetery when geographically possible. Doing so saves Veterans and their families thousands of dollars on final arrangement expenses.
Certified VFMC Providers, many of whom are Veterans themselves have deep roots in their communities and work closely with Vietnam Veterans of America, VFW, American Legion and other Veterans Service Organizations. All across America local Hospices have embraced the VFMC Clients Bill of Rights and are working closely with Certified VFMC Providers to ensure that Veterans and their families take full advantage of the benefits and savings they have so honorably earned.
Bennie Smith himself, joined the Armed Forces before college, and after being Honorably Discharged, matriculated at the John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1982, Bennie Smith became the first contractor to secure a contract with Dover Air Force Base. He held this contractual agreement for 14 years after which the military took over the operation. As the sole contractor, he was responsible for embalming, restorative art, dressing of remains and shipment of active duty members and their families from all branches of the military service to Europe, Southwest Asia, the Azures, Iceland, and Greenland.
Upon the family's request, the law requires that every eligible veteran receive a military funeral honors ceremony to include folding and presenting of the U.S. burial flag and the playing of "Taps." The law defines a military honors detail as consisting of two or more uniformed military persons with at least one member of the veteran's parent service of the armed forces.
