Evelyn Mary Smith entered the presence of her loving Savior on Saturday, March 5. She was born on November 23, 1933 and lived her entire life in Georgetown. She and her husband of 61 years, Arnold, owned and operated a farm, drove a long haul tractor-trailer and also owned and operated two local businesses, Smith’s Used Cars and Smith’s Family Restaurant, before retiring.

She received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1961 through the radio ministry of the late Oliver B. Greene. In time, her children and husband followed her in her faith. During her lifetime, she was an active member at First Baptist Church in Seaford, First Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church of Georgetown, as well as Sussex County Bible Church of Harbeson. She loved Jesus and she loved to tell others about Him.

Evelyn’s greatest joys were spending time with her family, traveling the country via motorhome with her husband and friends and cooking home-style meals from scratch. Her recipes are still staples on the menu at Marilyn’s Catering, owned by her daughter, and Smith’s Family Restaurant, now owned by her son.

She is preceded in death by her daughters, Hilda Marie and Kathy Jane; her sisters, Emma Marshall and Gladys Marine; her brother, Robert Wilson; as well as her parents Walter and Mary Wilson.

She is survived by her husband, Arnold, her three sons: Arnold Jr. (Chic) and his wife Darlene, Arlen (Willie) and his wife Patricia, James (Jimmy) and his wife Denise, as well as three daughters: Marilyn Hastings and her husband Harry, Shirley Burke and her husband Lloyd (Deceased) and Irene O’Day and her husband Frank. She was also the proud grandparent of 13 grandchildren and great-grandparent to 22 great grandchildren.
Services were officiated by her grandson Pastor Duane Smith of Sussex County Bible Church in Harbeson and by Pastor Richard Blades from Calvary Baptist Church in Georgetown.

A visitation will be held March 9 from 6-8 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown. There will also be a time of visitation on March 10 from noon to 1 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 22860 Dupont Blvd, Georgetown, followed by a funeral service.  She will be interred at Union Cemetery in Georgetown.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to The Gospel Hour, the radio ministry of the late Oliver B. Greene, at The Gospel Hour, Inc. P. O. Box 2024 Greenville, SC 29602
