Every once in awhile something happens that restores my faith in humanity. Today such an event happened. Sussex County Council persons, Joan Deaver (D-Rehoboth), George Cole (R-Ocean View), and Mike Vincent (R) denied the controversial Lingo/Townsend zoning law change (3-2) that would have definitely compromised the City of Lewes. Councilmen Vance Phillips (R-Laurel) and Sam Wilson (R-Georgetown) voted for the project which was expected. The swing vote was Mike Vincent (R-Seaford), who was expected to vote yes, but he went the other way.

A packed house in the council chambers of Lewes residents, when hearing Councilman Vincent's vote, let out a roar, as if their favorite football team had just scored a touchdown. Expressing concerns about the footprint and the water recharge problems, and his respect for the opposition by the Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission, Vincent did the right thing and voted no.

All that being said, as a local property owner, I am most grateful to Council Woman Deaver, Councilman George Cole, and especially to Councilman Mike Vincent who did the right thing. Mike Vincent, you are indeed an honest man. Your integrity and character are inspiring.  I was rough on you in some of my writings and indeed you have shown me what you are truly made of. I know the pressure you were under in this regard. Vance Phillips and Sam Wilson should take a lesson from your genuine approach to the land use business. I sincerely thank you.

Much credit goes to John Mateyko and Nadine Wick from the Managing Growth Around Lewes (MGAL) group who relentlessly and logically organized reasonable opposition based on fact instead of emotion and inspired the local citizenry to express their legitimate concerns to the Council. As a result, based on the evidence that these folks presented, the vote went the way it should have.

It's a great day in the City of Lewes and life is still good here by the Delaware Bay. Hooray, Hooray, Hooray!
