Veteran's Day reminds all Americans of the devotion and sacrifices the men and women of our armed forces have made to defend the liberties and freedoms we so cherish. This day of remembrance provides us the opportunity to join together to honor and thank those who have worn our nation's uniform and continue to serve our country.
While this has certainly been a nation-wide effort, we as Delawareans should be proud of the role our state's military components have played in the armed conflicts that have shaped the character of our country. From Delaware's regiments in the Revolutionary War who carried with them their famed fighting birds, the Blue Hens, to the establishment of one of nation's premier Air Force bases in Dover, soldiers from the First State have served honorably on battlefields both foreign and domestic.
Veteran's Day is also a time to reflect upon the continued need to fund and support our troops and their families. I was pleased to lend my support to many bipartisan efforts throughout my time in Congress to expand the types of services available to veterans returning from combat, from health care to education, and also to secure funding for the families of those soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As lawmakers, there is no greater responsibility than ensuring that our men and women in uniform are properly compensated for their distinguished service. This also includes funding military operations currently underway to guarantee that our troops in the field have access to resources and equipment that will allow them to defeat an ever-diversifying enemy and keep them as safe as possible. Without their willingness to go to battle, our country would be a vastly different place and we have a responsibility to ensure that their every need is met.
It has been a rare privilege to have represented veterans and current active duty troops from the great state of Delaware during my time in public office. It was President Lincoln who in his Gettysburg address encouraged his audience to, "be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced." With so many of our proud servicemen and women currently in combat zones in the Middle East and deployed around the world, and troops returning from overseas everyday, it is my hope that people across the state will join with me in dedicating ourselves to continuing that which our veterans bravely defended—the preservation of our democracy.
U.S. Rep. Michael Castle has been Delaware's representative in Congress since 1992. Prior to his time in Congress, he served as Governor from 1985-1992.
