Like the weather outside, Sussex Central softball’s offense is heating up at the right time, with the meat of its schedule upcoming.
Wednesday afternoon against rival Indian River (4-2 overall, 3-2 Henlopen) in town, the Lady Knights struck fast and hard, plating seven first inning runs in what ended as a 13-1, five frame thumping.
Leading the way for the Knights was senior Kristen Cooper, who returned to the circle after battling an injury. Cooper tossed all five innings to pick up the win and allowed just three Lady Indians’ hits while striking out seven.
One of those three hits was a solo home run off the bat of IR’s Jodie Powell, which accounted for the Indians’ only score.
Cooper herself blasted a homer in the contest, a three-run shot that came during a five-run, third inning rally.
Prior to Cooper’s home run in the third, play was stopped several minutes as Indians left fielder Marisa Lowe was carted off the field with what was reported as a serious leg injury. The injury appeared to occur when Lowe’s leg twisted awkwardly as she hit a fencepost in left.
Next up for Central (4-0, 4-0) is today’s home game against Dover at 4:15 p.m. Central then takes the field again Saturday to play St. Mark’s at 1 p.m. before Tuesday’s home showdown against undefeated rival Sussex Tech.
