Indian River wrestling lost its first match of a Jan. 22 quad meet at Sussex Tech, 32-30, before rebounding for a dramatic 38-37 victory over the host Ravens and throttling Henlopen South foe Woodbridge 53-28.

Leading the Vikings by two going into the first meet’s final match after junior Phillip Bradford earned a 1:49 second pin at 135, senior 140-pounder Jesus Baker lost an 8-2 decision that gave the Vikings the one-point team victory.

Max Wilkinson (145), Darontay Turner (189) and Devon Showell (215) all had pins for the Indians in the loss.

Against Sussex Tech in a 38-37 IR win, the Indians saw Wilkinson pin his opponent in 3:49 in the meet’s final match to tie the score and then went on to win in the eighth tie-breaker, which gives the additional team point to the squad that scored first the most times in the individual matches. Junior Matt Selba (160), senior Tim Bokinsky and Showell all had pins for IR, while Tech got six points each from seniors John Bridell (130) and Matt Bennett (135). IR jumped out to a commanding 27-4 lead over Tech before the Ravens stormed back and grabbed their 37-31 advantage heading into Wilkinson’s match.

Lastly, the Indians made short work of Woodbridge – which upset Tech earlier in the morning – and stayed tied for the Henlopen South lead. Wilkinson, Bokinsky, Selba, Turner and Josh Lopez all earned pins for IR against the Blue Raiders en route to the 53-28 victory.
