GLORIA WILLIAMS DAVIS
Gloria Williams Davis, 78, of Harbeson, passed away on August 10, 2008 at home. 

She was a Philadelphia Sports fan, an avid fan of the Baltimore Colts and “Johnny U.” She enjoyed her garden and sharing her plants and flowers with her family. She was a positive independent woman who enjoyed debating you on any issue.  Davis loved playing cards with her sisters and her bridge club. Her motto was “Family is the most important thing” and she instilled that value in her family.  

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry E. and Louise Catherine Hudson Williams; three sisters, Blanche Outten, Gladys Godwin and Louise Nelson. 

She is survived by her husband Charles E. Davis, of 35 years; children, Kitty Young and husband Jay of Lewes, Jackie Shockley and husband Preston of Lewes, Bobbie Mauer and husband Erich of Roanoke Va., Glenn Davis and wife Shirley of Millsboro, Gary Davis and wife Susie of Milford, and  Nancy Davis of Millsboro; three sisters; Nina Timmons, Harriett Baker and husband Vernon, Patsy Willey and husband Ralph all of Millsboro; 15 grandchildren, Brian, Sara, Dusty, Kristie, Cole, Amanda, Tammy, Dawn, Chad, Shawn, Stacey, Scott, Mandi, Gavin and Katie; and 16 great-grand children.  

The family would like to thank Delaware Hospice and the Tunnell Cancer Center for all of their support throughout Gloria’s illness. 

A Memorial  Service was held August 16, 2008 at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

Burial in Millsboro Cemetery, Millsboro. 

In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions be made to Delaware Hospice 100 Patriots Way Milford, Delaware 19963 or Tunnell Cancer Center 424 Savannah Road Lewes, Delaware 19958.

EDWIN KING TILGHMAN

Edwin King Tilghman, 86, of Gumboro, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord on Friday, August 8, 2008 at his home with his wife.

He was born January 10, 1922 in Pocomoke City, Md., he was the son of the late King and Elsie Tilghman.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he went on into the insurance business and then went on to own and operate such businesses as Tilghman’s Home Furnishings, Pizza Corner and South Division Street Market.

He was a member of the American Legion and was a member of Joshua’s House Church. One of his greatest pleasures was singing at local churches and nursing homes, spreading the word of the Lord to others.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Peggy Lorraine Tilghman; and a sister Margaret Virginia Groton.

Tilghman will be sadly missed by his loving and devoted wife Barbara C. Tilghman to whom he would have been married to 14 years on August 14, 2008; also left behind is the family he so dearly loved; two sons James E. Tilghman and wife Helen and Elton Taylor; three daughters, Sharon L. Long and husband Joseph, Shirley Taylor and Barbara Crockett; grandchildren, Jennifer Lord and husband Arthur, Michelle Hamilton and husband Scott, Jenny Crockett, Melista Crockett, Bryan Taylor and Tuesday Taylor; seven great-grandchildren; and a good friend Jimmy Chandler.

Funeral services were held August 14, 2008 at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

Interment with military honors at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury, Md.

Rev. Chuck Reynolds officiated.

KEVIN L. HITCHENS

Kevin L. Hitchens 45, of Gumboro, passed away on August 12, 2008.

He enjoyed gardening and landscaping especially working with flowers.  He was also known for his drawings, and was a great lover of animals. 

He was preceded in death by his father, James D. Hitchens, Sr. in 2000; and his brother Bryan Hitchens in 2005. 

He will be sadly missed by his mother, Glenda J. Hitchens of Gumboro; bothers, Barry Hitchens and wife Diane of Gumboro, James D. Hitchens Jr. and wife Tammy of Gumboro; his nieces and nephews, Mera, Chelsea, Trent, Keith and Kirt. 

Funeral Services were held on Monday, August 18, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro,     Interment in West Woods Cemetery, Gumboro.

EDWARD H. SHADEL, JR.

Edward H. Shadel, Jr., of Millville, 85, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at his home.

He was born in West Philadelphia, Pa. The family later moved to Glenolden, Pa.

He served in the United States Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific Transportation Corps. In the years following the war, he worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad and in construction. This was followed by 31 years of service with Verizon, formerly Diamond State Telephone Company. Upon retirement, he enjoyed winters in Florida, growing a garden, swimming in the Atlantic and the family pool with grandchildren.

Shadel’s true passion was serving the Lord and spreading his word to those often forgotten. He began a ministry for inmates at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown that included weekly Bible studies. His dedication also extended to visiting hospital and nursing home patients. A membership at Blackwater Fellowship Church in Roxana gave him opportunity to praise his Lord Jesus Christ and to serve him.

Shadel was preceded in death by his parents, Edward H. Shadel, Sr., and Pauline (Egner) Shadel; and sister, Edna “Dot” Weber.

Left to cherish his memory is his beloved wife of 62 years, Frances “Honey” Shadel; his loving children include a daughter, ViVienne Sexton; son in law, Phillip Sexton; son, Gregory Shadel; daughter in law, Lin Shadel; his special joys were his granddaughters, Tara Blitz and husband Richard M. Blistz, Jr., Tia Sexton and Elissia Jones and her husband Harry Jones; he, too, will be remembered by his three great-grandchildren, Caitlin Blitz, Connor Blitz, and Logan Jones; a niece, June Bailey; and two nephews, Wayne and Bob Weber.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 18 at the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

ROBERT J. GAYDOS

Robert J. Gaydos, 76, of Lewes, formerly of Eagleville, Pa.,  passed away quietly at his home with wife Peg at his side on Tuesday, August 12.

He was born in Coaldale, Pa. son of the late, John and Mary (Kusko) Gaydos.

He was a 1949 graduate of Coaldale High School. Gaydos served in United States Air Force during the Korean War. He worked at Alan Wood Steel Co. as a crane operator, where he also enjoyed playing on the softball team with co-workers and was home run champion.

He was of the Catholic faith and a firm believer in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He had an artistic side that manifested in music, arts, and crafts. Moving from Eagleville, Pa. to Lewes, he finished a home for himself and wife Peggy. At their home in West Bay Park, he enjoyed friends, crabbing, clamming, golf cart rides and splitting wood for his wood stove during winter months.

He is survived by his loving wife Margaret “Peg” (Rutter) Gaydos; children, Bruce Gaydos and wife Mary Lynn, Colleen Johnson, John Gaydos, Steve Gaydos and wife Cindy, and Robert Gaydos; a brother, Edward Gaydos and wife Marie; two sisters, Dolores McDonald and Barbara Gaydos; four grandchildren, Lauren, Valerie, Vicky and Justin Gaydos; and nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass was held on Tuesday August 19 at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions in Bob’s memory to, Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE. 19963.

ELSIE MARIAH POWELL

Elsie Mariah Powell, 101, died peacefully at home on August 13, 2008 after a short illness.

Powell was born on March 23, 1907 in Ocean View. She was the daughter of Hattie Belle Roberts Wharton and William Hiram Wharton.

She lived in the Muddy Neck and Ocean View area for the majority of her life. She attended the Muddy Neck School and graduated from the Ocean View School. After graduation, for a very short time, she lived and worked in Philadelphia at the Curtis Publishing Co. She was employed by the Carousel Motel for 33 years, retiring in her early 90’s. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Ocean View and the Eastern Star. She loved gardening and shopping. She was once known for her beautiful rose garden. She wrote in a note “I love to work.”

For the past three years, Elsie has been loved and cared for by her wonderful care givers, Bill and Virginia Hickman and Steven and Shari Baull, and daughters Courtney and Amber, as well as family members; Wanda Powell, Ralph Powell, and grandchildren, Carol Hurley, Jane Powell, Allen Powell, Lisa Powell, Lori Colley, and Jeff Powell.

She was preceded in death by the following siblings; Julia Rickards, Joshua Wharton, Clay Wharton, Elizabeth Lewis, Robert Wharton, and Wade Wharton. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Allen (Mac) Albert Powell, William (Bill) Raymond Powell, Albert (Pete) Handy Powell; her grandson William (Billy) Raymond Powell, Jr.

She is survived by her sisters, Isabelle Wharton Smith and Anna Wharton Bradley; her son Ralph Edwin Powell; daughter-in-law Wanda Willey Powell; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Saturday August 16 at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Ocean View.

Interment in Mariner’s Bethel Cemetery in Ocean View.

SAMUEL RAY HOPKINS “SAM”

Samuel Ray Hopkins “Sam” 66, of Millsboro, passed away on August 14, 2008 at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. 

Hopkins was a retired electrician serving the area for over 40 years.  He loved carpentry, plumbing, playing horseshoes, Bingo and bidding at Auctions during the family reunions.  He was a past member of the VFW Post 10638 in Millsboro. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church in Millsboro. 

His father, Curtis D. Hopkins, precedes him in death. 

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret A. Powell Hopkins; his mother Mary E. Watson Hopkins of Millsboro; brothers, Daniel C. Hopkins of Ellendale, John S. Hopkins of Millsboro, Robert L. Hopkins and his wife Evelyn of Millsboro, and Nathaniel Hopkins and his wifeEdith of Longo Md.; one sister Moezell Hyland (Harvey) of Laurel; aunt, Annie McLaughlin and husband John of Baltimore, Md.; uncle, Joe Watson of Baltimore Md.;  many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive him.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday August 21, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Watson Funeral Home 211 South Washington St. Millsboro, where friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday from noon –1 p.m. 

Internment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Millsboro. 

Pastor Claudia Waters will officiate.

JAMES RICHARD OLIVER

James Richard Oliver 79, of Bridgeville, passed away on August 12, 2008 at Christiana Hospital, Newark. 

He was formerly employed as a printer with the Philadelphia Enquirer and the TV Guide.  He was a sweet outgoing guy who loved life and people. He enjoyed fishing good food and crabbing. He also enjoyed playing Pinnacle.

His parents precede him in death,  Edwin and Ethel Dooley Oliver. 

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen Marie Kuhn Oliver; sons, Andrew Oliver and wife Tammy of Bridgeville; Douglas Oliver and wife Charlene, of Turnersville, NJ; two brothers, Edwin Oliver Jr. of Baltimore, Md.,  Robert Oliver of Baltimore, Md.; and one sister, Eillen Schneile of Baltimore, Md.;  and six grandchildren. 

A Committal service was held on Tuesday, August 19, at  the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Patriots Way Millsboro.

LOUISE C. MOORE
On August 12, 2008 Louise C. Moore, 99, passed away on August 12, 2008 from Cadbury at Lewes to be with her Lord.

Born in Oswego, New York on July 4, 1909. She was the daughter of Hassell and Maude Lounglgy Clayton. In 1945 she married James A. Moore also from Oswego, but teaching at Lewes High School. She joined him in Lewes and worked in the business office at Beebe Hospital until she retired. She was still a member of the Beebe Hospital Auxiliary.

Moore was a member of Lewes Presbyterian Church, were she served as the leader of the Mary Martha Circle until 2005. She was a member of the Kelly Class, after she was unable to help with the Rummage Sale, she bought the hog dogs for workday.

Her husband died January 1980, and she was predeceased by a brother Hassell, and sister Margaret.

Her brother Orville Clayton who lives in Bradenton, FL; and one niece and two nephews, survives her.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 19 at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road.

Burial in the Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

CAROL H. FERGUSON

Carol H. Ferguson, 52, of Long Neck, formerly of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving friends and family on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at her home. 

She was born in Wilmington, on December 17, 1955 daughter of Harold F. and Ann (Vari) Haigh, Sr.  She was a Home Consultant for New Dimension Homes in the Pot-Nets area.  She had a strong bond with her friends, customers and community.  She was an exceptional mother whose courage, faith, and love touched many. 

In addition to her mother, Ann L. Haigh, she is survived by a son Thomas Michael Ferguson; a brother Harold F. Haigh, Jr.; a sister Ann Louise King; a good friend T. Michael Ferguson and kitties Bella and Lacie. 

A funeral service was held on Tuesday August 19, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Rd. 

Interment was held privately at Gracelawn Cemetery. 

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions in Carol’s name to a charity of choice.

DOLORES M. KISTLER

Dolores M. Kistler, 77, of Selbyville, died August 11, 2008 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford.   

Kistler was born on September 2, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter to the late Charles Edward and Mary Elizabeth Burns. 

She was raised in Queens, NY with a strict work ethic that started at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York City as an aspiring administrative manager. She worked for the Federal Aviation Administration at Kennedy Airport and on Long Island New York until retirement. She relocated to sunny Florida where she worked for the City of Kissimmee Public Works Department for over 19 years as Office Manager.  Her most enjoyable time was working for the Delaware State Park as a parking lot attendant on Coastal Highway where she ensured that every animal accompanying each vehicle was given a free treat as admission to the beach that day. She loved animals with a passion.

She is survived by her son Charles Thomas Kistler of Selbyville; two grandchildren Charles Andrew and Emmett Alexander; her beautiful sister Roberta Helen McClain and husband Oliver; her endearing brother Charles Thomas Burns and wife Christine; and her comical cousin Anne Marie Jamison and husband Elwood.  Beth Woodall was her true north companion and primary care giver during many of those uncertain and painful times.

Memorial Services will be offered on Friday, August 22 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of St. Ann in Ocean View.

Internment services will be held privately in Pottsville, Pa. at a later date.
