CENTRAL SUSSEX -

ROLAND W. CHANDLER

Roland W. Chandler, 72, of Frankford, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2008, at P.R.M.C., in Salisbury, Md., surrounded by his loving family.

He worked for Mountaire Poultry for numerous years, retiring in 1998. 

He was a special husband, father, and grandfather.  He loved his family, especially his great-grandchildren.  They were his pride and joy.

He enjoyed camping, bike riding, and taking vacations.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Chandler; his mother, Catherine (Banks) Chandler; his brother, Preston Chandler; and his sister, Ruth Gum.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Teeny) Chandler; his two daughters, Denise Tripp and her husband, Dennis, of Dagsboro; and Linda Toomey and her husband, Marty, of Laurel; his grandchildren, Marcy Robbins and her husband, Kevin; Heidi Roytas and her husband, Rob; Faith Brian and her husband, Brandon; Crystal BeMiller and her boyfriend, Jimmy; Dennis L. Tripp, Jr. and his wife, Heather; and Kyle Tripp; his great-grandchildren, Shelby and Tyler Robbins; Jocelyn Roytas; Dennis L. Tripp, III; Rebecca Tripp; Dallas Mitchell; Britney and Lynn BeMiller; his four sisters, Joan Jenkins and her husband, Edgar; Joyce Tubbs; Jean Robinson and her husband, George; and Carolyn Moore and her husband, Clinton; his two brothers, George Chandler and his wife, Chris; and Virgil Chandler and his wife, Betty Jane; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, July 10, at noon, at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford, where friends may call after 10 a.m.

Burial will be in Dagsboro Redmen’s Memorial Cemetery.

JOAN C. HAMMOND

Joan C. Hammond, of Frankford, formerly of Blades, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, June 27, 2008 at Atlantic Shores Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Millsboro.

Hammond was born in Wilmington on May 13, 1932, daughter of the late John and Esther (Doughtery) Conner.

She was a lifetime member of the Millville Ladies Auxiliary Fire Company, a member of the Blades Ladies Auxiliary Fire Company and a member of the Millville United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years William A. Hammond; six children, William A. Hammond and his wife Carol, Nancy Trice and her husband Ron, John Hammond and his wife Judi, Karen Massey and her husband Dale Kathy Reinhart, Lisa Thomas and her husband  Richard; 12 grandchildren, BJ Hammond, Aaron Hammond, RJ Trice, Michael Trice and his wife Skyler, Christina Trice, Shane Hammond and his wife Laura, Zachary Hammond, Tyler Massey and his wife Natasha, Mary Massey, Curtis Reinhart, Melanie Reinhart and Willie Thomas; six great-grandchildren, Jasmine Trice, Ashton Trice, JT Trice, Brendan Trice, Sky Hammond and Gabi Hammond; two brothers, Jack Conner and his wife Jeannie and Ken Conner and his wife Linda.

Funeral services were held July 2 at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral, Ocean View.

Interment at Mariner’s Bethel Cemetery, Ocean View.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Joan’s name to Millville Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 64, Millville, DE 19970.

CHARLES HURD

Charles Hurd, 82, of Lewes, went to be with his heavenly father on Friday, June 27, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, after a brief illness.  He was born and raised in Felton, the son of the late, Mary and Charles W. Hurd.  He moved to Lewes 42 years ago with his wife, Beverly and their two sons, Rafe and Matthew.

Hurd wanted to be near his younger brother, Buck, so they could go clamming at Massey’s Landing.  Charles was a truck driver for many years during for several companies, including Preston Trucking, Hudson Feed and Grain and most recently, Dressco, of Lewes.  He was a member of the Lewes Presbyterian Church and had served in the Army during World War II under the command of General George Patton, serving in Germany, France and other parts of Europe.

He had a wood shop in his back yard, where he spent most of his time with best friend and youngest son, Matt and beloved grandson, Dain and neighbor, Dave.

He was preceded in death by his two grandbabies, Madison and Christian; his one daughter, Patricia; his four sisters, Ruth Hurd; Thelma Ford; Hazel Brummond, and Marie Jenkins; and one brother, Leonard “Buck” Hurd.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Beverly; his seven sons, David, of Angel Camp, Calif.; Mark Hurd and his wife, Donna, of Greenwood; Adam Hurd, of Milford; Rory Hurd and his wife, Mary, of New Castle; Daniel Hurd and his wife, Jennifer, of Milford; Rafe Hurd and his wife, Joanne, of Millsboro; and Matthew Hurd and his wife, Dawn, of Lewes; his two daughters, Susie Burris and her husband, Willie, of Milford; and April, of Milford; his 12 grandchildren; and his 12 great-grandchildren; is one sister, Mary and her husband, Roland, of Milford; his brother, Howard, of Louisiana; his sister-in-law, Lois Hurd, of Lewes; and his brother-in-law, Harold Jenkins, of Louisiana, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, July 1, at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Lewes.

Reverend Harry Hughes officiated.

Interment in Lewes Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Lewes Presbyterian Church Restoration Fund, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE  19958.

RONALD EUGENE “BIFF” HILLIARD


Ronald Eugene “Biff” Hilliard, 32, of Selbyville, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at his residence. 

He was born on May 19, 1976, in Dover, the youngest son of John and Rosetta Hilliard.  He played Pop Warner Football and loved playing jokes on his loved ones.  He graduated from Indian River High School, the Class of 1995.

Hilliard was employed by the State of Delaware, Department of Corrections, in Smyrna, after working at various jobs.  On July 1, 2000, he married the former Tashaye Turner.  Their union was blessed with two daughters, Ka’Miya and Ke’Aira.  He was a very devoted family man and will be missed so very much.  He enjoyed motorcycles, his sister-in-law Pam’s tuna/macaroni salad, and his beloved grandmother’s special apple cake.  He found great pleasure in kissing his parents and even getting between them in bed.  The affection was mutual.  “Biff” always gave his brother/hero Greg, crazy Christmas gifts and enjoyed trading things with his brother-in-law, AJ.

Hilliard was preceded in death by an older brother, John Hilliard, Jr.; his grandfather, Dorsey Hilliard, Sr.; and his uncle, John Bailey.

He leaves to mourn his loss and cherish so many precious memories, his beloved wife, Tashaye; his daughters, Ka’ Miya and Ke’Aira, of Selbyville; his son, Tyrone E. Hilliard, of Dover; his devoted parents, John and Rosetta Hilliard, of Selbyville; his brother and sister-in-law, Gregory and Pamela Hilliard, of Smyrna; his grandmother, Mary Hilliard, of Selbyville; his grandparents, Robert and Marie Matthews, of Roxana; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Anthony and Sandra Turner; his brother-in-law, Anthony “AJ” Turner, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Arraye Turner, all of Sudlersville, Md.; his special nieces, Monique; Jasmine; and Shierra Hilliard, of Smyrna; his devoted friends, Damon “Goose” Butler; and Tasha Watson; his special friends, Thomas Lawrence; AJ Turner; Ryan Robinson; Damon Bivens; Troy Haines; and Ce Ce Belmont; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, July 1, at Calvary Pentecostal Church, Bishopville, Md.

Reverend Sylvester Briddell officiated.

Burial in Zoar Golden Acres, Selbyville.

Final arrangements provided by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

ELIJAH B. TYRE

Elijah B. Tyre, 74, of Millsboro, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Atlantic Shores Nursing Home, Millsboro.

He was born in Millville, the son of the late, Earl and Thelma (Bennett) Tyre.  He served with the United States Army.

Tyre worked at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach until his illness.  He was a former member of the Georgetown Kiwanis Club.  Elijah enjoyed taking long drives on the many back country roads of Sussex County.

He is survived by his son, Steven Tyre and his wife, Denise, of Dagsboro; his daughter, McCoy and her husband, Keith, of Bridgeville; his brother, Lemuel Tyre, of Ocean View; his sister, Carol Elliott, of Bridgeville; his granddaughter, Dakota Tyre; his grandson, Trevor Timmons; and several nieces and nephews.

All Services were private.

BARBARA MULLEN MCBRIDE

Barbara Mullen McBride, 76, of Millville, formerly of Alexandria, Va., passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.  She was a loving wife and mother, whose greatest joy, was spending time with her family.

McBride enjoyed her time as a volunteer for St. Ann’s Bazaar, assisting with the Bingo at Shady Grove, and helping with the Readings for Visually Impaired.  Her friends and family will miss the delicious cakes she made for them and the many volunteer groups.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Mullen and Josephine Mullen Wells; and her two brothers, Joseph and Karlin Mullen.

McBride is survived by her husband of 61 years, Byron Meredith McBride, of Millville; her four daughters, Bonita McBride, of Clarksville; Donna Nugent, of Alexandria, Va.; Joanne McBride, of Alexandria, Va.; and Penny Deith and her husband, Roger, of Ocean View; her two grandchildren, Sgt. Jason Nugent, of Texas, of U.S. Army; and Kelly Nugent, of Alexandria, Va.; and her two great-grandchildren, Jason Nugent, Jr.; and Madison Nugent.

A Memorial Mass was held on Tuesday, July 1, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in her memory to the Sjogren’s Syndrome Foundation, 6707 Democracy Boulevard, Suite No. 325, Bethesda, MD  20817.

KENDAL BARKER PRETTYMAN


Kendal Barker Prettyman, 85, of Country Rest Home in Greenwood, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2008.  He was a native of Lewes, the son of the late, William Olva and Lottie (Spicer) Prettyman.  He was a former resident of both Georgetown and Rehoboth Beach.  He was a 1941 graduate of Lewes High School.  He worked at Fort Miles under the U.S. Army Engineers prior to enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. Fifth Division, at the height of World War II and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima and was involved in the occupation of Japan.  He joined the Army Reserves in 1949 and retired in 1983 as a Major.  After the war, he was a parts manager for Henlopen Motor Company in Lewes (later Don Gallagher Motors) for 11 years.  He worked for Georgetown Trust, later acquired Wilmington Trust Company, serving 32 years before retiring as a senior banking officer in 1989.  He was past president of the Sussex County Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.  He also served in various officer positions with his children’s school band boosters, wrestling boosters, and Georgetown Little League.  He served as secretary of Georgetown Union Cemetery from 1968 until 2002 and was a past treasurer of The Salvation Army-Georgetown branch.  He was an original charter member of the Delmarva Easter Seals and also volunteered at the Sussex Pregnancy Care Center and with Meals on Wheels.  He was a member of VFW Post No. 9264, Fifth Marine Division Association, and the Marine Corps. League, along with its Military Order of the Devil Dogs.  He was a past member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes and a past member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Georgetown, where he had served as Sunday school superintendent, chairman of the trustees, chairman of the finance committee, and Methodist Men president.  He joined Lewes Church of Christ in 1995. 

His first wife of 45 years, Jeanette R. Prettyman, passed away on April 15, 1993. 

Prettyman is survived by his wife of 13 years, Genevieve B. Prettyman, of Rehoboth Beach, his three sons, Ray K. Prettyman and his wife, Linda, of Largo, Fla.; Keith R. Prettyman, of Georgetown; and Ralph W. Prettyman and his wife, Andrea, of Milford; his daughter, Beth P. Berrie and her husband, Chuck, of Hartly; his step-son, Richard Burton, of Selbyville; his two step-daughters, Cheryl Skinner and her husband, Richard, of Magnolia; and Carol Dukes and her husband, Joseph, of Frankford; his eight grandchildren, Erica P. Jarmon; Tabitha, Jacob, Zachary, Alyssa, and Austin Prettyman; and Dalton and Sawyer Berrie; his one great-grandson; his five step-grandchildren, Richard and Lee Skinner; Alisha White; and Crystal and David Dukes; and his five step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on Sunday, July 6, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Lewes, with Graveside Services and Burial, with full military honors, immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 129 West Fourth Street, Lewes, DE  19958; or to the Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Avenue, Lewes, DE  19958; or to the Milford Historical Society, P. O. Box 352, Milford, DE  19963.

HELEN P. SMITH

Helen P. Smith, 83, of Millsboro, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at her residence.  She was born on August 17, 1924, in Willards, Md., the daughter of the late, John F. and Addie (Wells) Parker.

She worked for the State of Delaware at Stockley Center, retiring in 1990, after many years of service.

Smith was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Millsboro.  She enjoyed reading, gardening, bird watching, and she was an unconditional giver of love to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 38 years, Ralph James Smith, who passed away in 1980, and her sister, Mildred Dennis.

Smith is survived by her two daughters, Ann Funds, of Rehoboth Beach; and Lana Robb and her husband, Jeff, of Millsboro; her sister, Dorothy Brasure, of Laurel; her three grandchildren, Allison Funds; Amanda Robb; and Alex Robb; and her one great-granddaughter, Ava Wilson.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, July 5, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

Reverend Ed Kuhling officiated.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriot’s Way, Milford, DE  19963.
