LOUISE C. CRAWFORD
Louise C. Crawford, 73, of Millville, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., daughter to the late, Frederick Robert Heigold and Sophie (Wolf) Heigold.

Crawford was a retired Real Estate Office Manager.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald E. Crawford in 2006; her brother, Fred Heigold; and sister, Marjorie Koch.

She is survived by two sons, Douglas E. Crawford and his wife Alison, Scott D. Crawford and his wife Ellen; five grandchildren, Kelsey, Connor, Julia, Alexander, Sarah.

Services were private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to, American Cancer Society of Sussex County, PO Box 163, Salisbury, MD. 21805.

CAREY D. MADDOX
Carey D. Maddox, 53, of Millsboro, passed away on January 23, 2009, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury Md.

Maddox was a maintenance mechanic for Allen’s Poultry.  He loved car shows, basketball, and bowling. He owned a trophy winning truck.  His favorite saying was “you ain’t got to go home, but you got to get outta here.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Forewell and Ruth King Maddox; and his wife, Shirley Maddox in 2005; and a brother, Forewell Chuck Maddox Jr. 

He is survived by his children, John Edward Belfield Sr. of Millsboro, Vickie Belfield of Portland, Tenn., Kristen Brown of Crisfield, Md., Christine Maddox of Crisfield, Md.; brothers, Donald Maddox and wife Terri of Salisbury, Md., Darnell Maddox and wife Antoinette of Marion, Md., 11 grandchildren; and one great grandchild; a host of friend’s relatives and special nephew Donald. 

Services was held on Saturday, January 31, at St. Johns 2nd Baptist Church Mt. Joy near Millsboro. 

Pastor Annie Jane Custis officiated.

Burial in the church cemetery.

JOSEPHINE M. “ JERRI” SCHOFIELD
Josephine M. “ Jerri” Schofield, 76, of Ocean View, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Monday, January 26, 2009. 

Schofield, formerly of Newark, and Delaware County, Pa., retired from the Christina School District as a paraprofessional. She had been an active member of the St. Anne Sodality and the VFW Auxiliary, and also volunteered at the Lord Baltimore Elementary School.  She also was a member of the Red Hat Society. As the former Josephine M. Casey, she graduated from Collingdale High School in Collingdale, PA.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Howard Reading Schofield; her daughter, Karen Gorman and her husband Bryan Gorman of Panama City, Fl.; her son, Kevin Schofield from Meridian, Idaho; and her daughter, Kimberly Hart and her husband Bill Hart of Elkton, Md.; her four grandchildren, Michael Daniels and Thomas Hart of Bloomington, Ind., Cory Hart of Elkton Md., and Bret Schofield of Boise, Idaho, will sadly miss her; she is also survived by her sister, Vernice Fox of Philadelphia; and brother, Richard Casey of Broomall, Pa., along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, January 30 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Bethany Beach.

Entombment took place immediately following the Mass at the Sussex County Veterans Cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in memory of Jerri to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE. 19963.

MABEL L. HUDSON
Mabel L. Hudson, 84, of Dagsboro, went to her final resting place on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury, Md., after surviving breast cancer and fighting a hard battle with diabetes.

She was born in Whaleysville, Md., daughter to the late, Phillip and Sadie (Justice) Steele.

She retired from the Delaware Food Service where she worked for the Indian River School District at Lord Baltimore Elementary School. She also was the baker of the famous “Orange Bow Knots” for Patti-Lyn Restaurant in Bethany Beach for many years and was a dessert maker for Topside Restaurant in Ocean View. She also worked many summers as a cook at Camp Barnes in Bayard, DE.

Hudson was a dedicated worker, wife, mother and grandmother.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. Hudson in 1980; her daughter, Arlene V. Hudson; brothers, Phillip Steele, Jr. and Kendall J. Steele; her sister, Katie Calhoun; nephew, Joseph Calhoun, Sr.; step-son, William E. Hudson; and son-in-law, Thomas B. Price, Sr.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda L. Price of Pittsville, Md., Phyllis Bailey of Fruitland, Md.; step-daughter, Barbara Hudson of Bishopville, Md.; eight grandchildren, Tami Johnson of Salisbury, Md., Ron Lewis of Willards, Md., Tiffany Bloodsworth of Pittsville, Md., Tara Wolske and her husband Matt of Pittsville, Md., David Mitchell and his wife Michelle of Dagsboro, Jerry Mitchell of Laurel, Dawn Mitchell of Fairfax, Va., John McBroom of Georgetown;  and eleven great-grandchildren.

A funeral service was held Monday February 2, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Frankford.     Burial in St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville.

Flowers will be accepted or the family suggests memorial contributions to, Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD. 21802-1733, or, Atlantic General Hospital Palliative Care Unit, 9733 Healthway Dr, Berlin, MD. 21811.

HERSCHEL HENRY QUILLEN, JR.
Herschel Henry Quillen, Jr., 80, of Dagsboro, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2009.

Quillen was born and raised in Dagsboro, son of the late Herschel Sr. and Pearl Quillen.  He graduated from the Valley Forge Military Academy, class of 1947, and returned home to work on the family farm and harness racing business with his father.  Herschel later retired from Vlasic Foods, Inc.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Quillen in 2004. 

He is survived by his son, Herschel Quillen, III, of Wilmington; two daughters, Cindy Whaley and her husband Terry and Nancy Smith and her husband Alan all of Laurel; five grandchildren, Andrew Quillen, Francesca Quillen, Tracy Whaley Kennedy and her husband Matthew, Matthew Whaley and his wife Gina and Scott Smith and his wife Lindsey; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madison Smith; he is also survived by a stepdaughter, Dyan Lynch and her husband Brasure; five stepsons, David Givans, Ron Givans, Jim Givans and his wife Cyndy, Gary Givans and his wife Carol and Jeffrey Givans and his wife Sandra; and 10 step-grandchildren. 

A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Thursday, February 5, at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville. 

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Herschel’s name to St. George’s United Methodist Church, 34281 Omar Rd., Frankford, DE 19945.  Arrangements by Melson Funeral Services of Frankford.

ALLAN M. SHAFER
Allan M. Shafer, 89, of Harbeson, passed away at home on Saturday , January 31, 2009 

Shafer was born in Greene N. Y., the  son of the late John and Ella (Russell) Shafer . 

Shafer worked as a furniture painter for many years. He also owned and operated a lawn mower repair service in the Nassau area for many years.  He was a member of Lewes Church of Christ and enjoyed gardening, dancing and family gatherings.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Jessica Musa Shaffer, January 3, 2009. 

He is survived by his children,  Winfield Martin, of Harbeson, Faith Gilmour and her husband James, of St. Louis, Mo., Allanora Thompson and her husband Harry of Lewes, Margaret Rose Lloydell and her husband Marcus of Milford Beverly Pratt, Kathy Pratt, Robert Shafer, Diane Freelove; stepson, Nathan Miller, Hallstead, Pa.;  stepdaughter, Sharon Smith, Oak Orchard; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren

Funeral services were held, Tuesday, February 3, in the chapel of Lewes Church of Christ, Milton.

DAVID BARRY GIVENS, JR.
David Barry Givens, Jr., passed away on January 30, 2009. 

He was a construction worker and a proud  member of the local Carpenters Union.  He loved hunting and fishing and was a huge Giants fan. He enjoyed stock car racing and going to the local  dirt track.

Givens is survived by his family, daughters, Kelsie Ann Givens, Hunter Erin Givens; William E. and Patricia A. Webb Sr., Eddie Webb Jr. and companion Margaret, Tammy L. Long and husband Shane, David and Dee Givens Sr., Christopher Givens, John T. Givens, Elizabeth Givens, also leaving behind beloved aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins, and a host of special friends. 

His grandfathers, Bill Webb, Raymond Givens Jr., and Greer Sams; grandmothers, Judy Waite and Phyllis Givens Conway precede him.

Services will be private.

The family requests no flowers, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.

ROBERT J. STANAITIS
Robert J. Stanaitis, 82, of Millsboro, formerly of Aston, Pa., passed away Thursday January 29, 2009 at the Renaissance Health Care Center in Millsboro.

He was born in Kulpmont, Pa., son of the late, John and Emily (Laskoski) Stanaitis.

Stanaitis was a retired carpenter and served with the United States Navy during World War II.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert, Jr.; sisters, Evelyn and Helena; brothers, Leonard, Raymond and Hubert

He is survived by his loving wife, Anna M. Stanaitis; his children, Elaine McGroerty, John Stanaitis, Ann Marie Moore, Richard Stanaitis; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

ROBERT J. ‘BIFF’ BAKER
Robert J. ‘Biff’ Baker, 81, of Ocean View, formerly of Wilmington, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.

He was born in Wilmington and worked for many years at the E. I. DuPont Company. He served with the US Navy aboard the USS Arkansas during WWII. He was past commander of American Legion  Stahl Post#30 of New Castle. He was a member of VFW Post #7234 at Quillens Point in Ocean View. He was a also a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach. He enjoyed fishing, crabbing and gardening.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Jean (Carello) Baker; two stepsons, Eugene Poppitt and his wife Dora of Lincoln, Julius Poppitt and his wife Lois of Lepsic; stepdaughter, Angeline Rees and her husband Robert of New Castle; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held Friday February 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services on West Avenue in Ocean View, followed by  a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach.

Burial at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
