William James “Jim” Calloway, age 87, of Georgetown, went home to be with the Lord on January 25, 2010.  He was baptized in June 2002. 

Jim was born February 1, 1922 son of the late Alfred James and Marie (Oliphant) Calloway. 

Jim served as a Corporal in the US Marine Corp from 1943 – 1946.  He served in WWII in the 5th Marine Division of the 11th Amphibian Tractor Battalion.  He served at Iwo Jima and was present at the raising of the American Flag on Mt. Suribachi. 

Jim was superintendent of Melvin Joseph Construction Company for 47 years and also was a mechanic for Melvin Joseph’s race car.

Jim loved farming at home and really enjoyed hunting.  He loved his family and will be greatly missed by all.

Jim was married to Shirley Doris Calloway for 62 years she preceded him in death in 2003.  They had nine children together.  In addition to his parents, and wife, Jim is preceded in death by three sons: James Alfred, Kenneth Jay and Ronald Irving Calloway; a daughter: Marie Elizabeth Holloway and two sisters: Dorothy Bryan and Lola Rogers.

Jim is survived by daughters: Barbara Ward and husband Ronald, Jane Parker and husband Mike, Millie Hudson and husband Sidney and Debi Ward and husband Scott, a son: Michael Calloway and wife Linda; 12 grandchildren: Shelly Brittingham, Jeff Ward and wife Wendy, Amy and Pamela Holloway, Matthew and Joshua Parker, Jennifer Burton and husband Mark, Jordan and Grant Ward, Jeremy, Mikaela and William Calloway; 6 great grandchildren: Whitney Brittingham, Samantha and Katlyn Ward, Alexis Holloway, Haley Wilson and Brianna Parker; and two sisters: Louise Harris and Aliene Drandorff.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 1:00pm in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, De where friends may call after 11:00am.  Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Georgetown.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 625, Georgetown, DE 19947.
