ALBERT W. PHILLIPS
Albert W. Phillips, 65, on Friday, May 22, 2009, devoted husband, father, and friend, peacefully left to be with his Lord and Savior. 

Born to Franklin and Erma J. Phillips in Laurel, on December 28, 1943, Phillips graduated from Laurel High School in 1963.  He joined the Delaware Army Nation Guard directly after high school and began working for E.I. DuPont in Seaford.  In 1967 he reenlisted in the Army on Active Duty.  As an Infantryman and Ranger, he was assigned to the First Cavalry Division, 5th Regiment serving in Vietnam from 1968 through 1969.  During his tour of duty, Phillips was awarded (2) Bronze Stars for Valor, (2) Air Medals, and (2) Purple Heart for wounds incurred in combat.  Upon returning home he resumed working at DuPont, retiring in 1984.  Over the next 23 years Phillips worked for the Sussex County Office of Community Development and owned and operated two businesses in Salisbury, Md.
 
He is survived by his loving wife, Gail of Seaford; son Dwayne Phillips of Millville; son, Darren Phillips of Salisbury, Md.; and one brother, Wayne Phillips, in Delmar, Md.; two sisters-in-law, Betty Phillips, Seaford and Peggy Phillips, Milford.  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the area.
 
The viewing and memorial services were held on Friday, May 29, at St, John’s United Methodist Church, Seaford.  
Burial at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled Veterans of America.
 
Arrangements were by the Cranston Funeral Home, Seaford.

JOYCE A. WEST
Joyce A. West, 73,  of Georgetown, died Friday, May 29, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes in the heart unit of heart failure.

She was born on March 9, 1936 in the French Port of Ashtabula in Ohio. She came to Delaware in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. In the late 1950’s she worked at a sewing factory in Georgetown called Christiana Mills. In the late 1960’s she worked at the Milford Stitching Company in Milford, where she worked off and on for over 30 years, retiring at the age of 69.

She was an avid racing fan since 1958 locally, and loved NASCAR racing. She liked to travel, go camping and just hanging out with friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, James L. Roberts; her mother, Vivian D. (Abby) Shew; and her stepfather, Watson Shew; her husband, Preston T. West; three brothers, James E. Roberts, Carl E. Roberts and John F. Roberts.

She is survived by two sons, James R. “ Jay Cleveland Jr.” and Mark Evan West both of Georgetown; her sister, Dorthea Veasey and brother-in-law Harry Veasey of Georgetown; her brother, Wayne E. Roberts, Sr. of Lake Whales, Fla.; four grandchildren, Ray and Susan Cleveland, Miles and Lisa (Carlisle) Cleveland , Robert and Roxie Cleveland and James R. Cleveland III and his girlfriend Jennifer Mohr; five great grandchildren, Jordan, Brandon. Makayla, Miranda and Dalton Cleveland; also many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 7, from 2-4 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
