FRANCES MEYERS
Frances Meyers, 65, of Ocean City, Md., passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2009.

She was born on March 7, 1943, to the late John Trotto and Angelina Trotto Frappolli who survives her.

She was a homemaker.  She was a member of the Elks. She loved traveling, loved the beach, but most of all loved her family, and was a fantastic mother – gracious and giving.  “she was even a great mother-in-law” who always thought of others, and always put her kids first.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband F. William Meyers, who died in 1998; and Louise Carty and Helen Trotto.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons,  Greg Meyers, and his wife Kim of Destin, Fla. and Joseph Quaranto, and his wife Michelle of Destin, FL.; four daughters, Kim Smith, Dawn Warfield and Sherrell Lloyd, and her husband Dale, all of Ocean City, and Danielle Quaranto, of Selbyville; one brother, Warren Trotto and his wife Sharon, of Burlington, NJ; and one sister Mary Gessner, and her husband Max of Beverly, NJ.; 10 grandchildren, Nathaniel, Melissa, Teresa, Davey, Anthony, Anjel, Rose, Gabrielle, Kaley, Kendra; and four great-grandchildren,  Nazair, Sencere, Jaida, and Nicholas; she is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and beloved special friends and extended family.  She will be greatly missed…

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 24, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

Pastor Bob Hudson officiated.

Interment was private.

DONALD F. CARLSON
Donald F. Carlson, 78, of Ocean View, formerly of Lewisburg, Pa., passed away Saturday, January 17, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Williamsport, Pa., son to the late, Frederick and Adda (Lebkicker) Carlson.

He was a retired home salesman.

Carlson was a member of 1st Baptist Church of Sunbury, Pa. He loved to play Pinnacle and rebuild antique Schwinn bicycles . He also loved fishing, the outdoors and being near the Ocean.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Hassenplug of Lewisburg, Pa.; by his loving wife of 52 years, Leah Marie (Clark) Carlson; their daughter, Barbara Carlson of Ocean View; their son, Timothy Carlson of Ocean View; and sister, Jean Pittenturf of Lewisburg, Pa.

Services and burial was private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Donald’s memory to, Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE. 19963.

DAVID E. ROWE, JR.
David E. Rowe, Jr., 26, of Georgetown, died Monday, January 19, 2009, near Harbeson, as a result of a tragic automobile accident. 

He was born June 18, 1982 at Camp Lejune, NC, son of David E. Rowe, Sr. and Teresa L. (Anderson) Rowe of Rehoboth Beach.

Rowe was a native Sussex Countian.  He graduated from Cape Henlopen High School in 2000 and joined the military.  He was a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, Alpha2/319th Airborne Field Artillary Regiment, Ft. Bragg, NC.  He served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003 and 2004.  Coming out of active duty in 2004, David served in the reserves; he was a Platoon Sergeant with the 673rd Quartermaster Company located in Dover.  Most recently, he worked at the Orient Corp. of America in Seaford, DE, as a dye maker.  He loved the beach, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew.  But, first and foremost he was a devoted father who leaves behind his 18-month-old son, David E. Rowe III, who was his whole world.

In addition to his son, he is survived by his loving parents, David Sr. and Teresa Rowe of Rehoboth Beach; his devoted sister, Heather L. Rowe of Falls Church, Va.; his paternal grandmother Beatrice Megee and her husband Ernie of Georgetown; his maternal grandparents Norman and Dorothy Anderson of Dagsboro; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and his many Army buddies and long time friends. 

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Jessie E. Rowe.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 26, at Parsell Funeral  Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

The Rev. Dr. Edward R. Wilkins officiated.

Interment at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to a Trust Fund for David E. Rowe III, c/o Delaware National Bank, 20281 Coastal Highway, Lewes, DE  19958.

JAMES E. “SLOW MACHINE” HOPKINS
James E. “Slow Machine” Hopkins, 55, of Salisbury, Md., was called to rest on January 19, 2009 at PRMC, Salisbury, Md. 

He was the son of the late James Wise and Minnie Hopkins Bibbins. 

He was united in Holy Matrimony on August 25, 1990 to the love of his life Ramona Elizabeth Hopkins.

Hopkins was a truck driver employed over the years by Reed Trucking, Rodney Harmon Trucking, Mountaire Farms, Showell Farms, Glacier (Burris Foods), H & M Bay, and Wm P. Hearne Produce. 

He loved spending time with his family and friends, driving his truck across the country, never meeting a stranger, telling jokes, watching football, barbequing, and just making all feel welcomed and loved.  He loved his wife and family unconditionally right up to the end and his favorite hymns were “Going Up The Yonder” and “I’m Coming Up.” Hopkins was preceded in death by his parents, uncle William Hopkins, sister Deborah Hopkins-McCray; niece, Danicka Hopkins; sister-in-law, Julia Brown; and father-in-law, Bailey Nutter.

He is survived by his wife of 18 blissful years, Ramona Elizabeth Hopkins; three daughters, Tuwana Thornton of Miramar, FL, Lakeisha Reynolds of Dover, and Malanie Wharm of New Castle; two sons, Dana Thornton (Sharla) and Percy Thornton both of Salisbury, Md., nine grandchildren; three brothers, Ruben McCray, Ronald Hopkins (Pamela) and Tyrone Hopkins; two sisters, Delphine Williams (Thomas) and Vanessa Grey (Maurice); two aunts, Lillian Kenney, and Elva Wise; three uncles, Noah L. Hopkins, Melvin Hopkins, and Kendall Hopkins; mother-in-law, Eleanor Nutter; special aunt in law, Ruth Belle; two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Barnett and Edith Nutter; four brothers-in-law, Frederick Nutter, Julius Nutter, Thomas Nutter, and Allen Brown; and a host of  nieces, nephews, family, and friends.  

Services were held Saturday, January 24 at the St. Johns 2nd Baptist Church, Mount Joy Road, near Millsboro.

Interment in the adjoining church cemetery.

AGNES K. MELSON
Agnes K. Melson, 86, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 23, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Melson was born in Dagsboro, on July 20, 1922 daughter of the late Elmer and Emma (Banks) West.  She was a wholehearted Christian woman who was deeply devoted to her family.  She also attended Millville Methodist Church. 

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Alvin E. Melson; a devoted grandson, Alton Terry Moore; and three sisters, Marcella Corby, Madeline Hickman and Mattie Vickers.      She is survived by her devoted daughter Kathryn Moore of Georgetown; a devoted granddaughter Sherry Littleton and her husband Wayne of Frankford; a grandson Jerry Moore of Rehoboth; two great-grandchildren, Nicole Earhart of Frankford and Tommy Moore of Georgetown; a sister, Pauline Powell of Selbyville; very loyal and devoted neighbors, Delmar and Michelle Cathell of Georgetown and several nieces, nephews and friends. 

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 27, at the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services.      Burial at St. George’s Cemetery in Clarksville. 

In lieu of flowers, to defray the funeral expenses the family suggests memorial contributions in Agnes’ name to Melson Funeral Services, P.O. Box 100, Frankford, DE 19945.

WILLIAM LOFTLAND MARVEL
William Loftland Marvel, 92, of Lewes, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Renaissance Health Center in Millsboro. 

Marvel was born on January 14, 1917 in Lewes, son of the late Joseph C. and Jency (Carpenter) Marvel. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy. Marvel retired as chief of police in Rehoboth Beach, after 23 years of service.  He was then employed as a bailiff with the Superior Court in Georgetown. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years Elizabeth (Shockley) Marvel; a daughter, Alice Carol Swift; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. 

A graveside service was held January 26 at White’s Chapel Cemetery on Rt. 1 near Milton.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in William’s name to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

GEORGE BRAINARD CARROLL, JR.
George Brainard Carroll, Jr., 82, of Dover, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Cadbury at Lewes.

Carroll, a long time resident of Dover, was born in Middletown, on July 11,1926.  He is the eldest son of the late George Brainard Carroll, Sr. and Elizabeth Johnston Carroll of Dover; brother of the late Crawford J. Carroll of Dover and the late Joseph A, Carroll of Easton Md. and Rehoboth Beach.

After graduating from Dover High School in 1944, Carroll served in the United States Navy during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Carroll was the owner of B. Carroll & Sons. Inc., an International Farm Equipment Dealership in Dover.  He retired in 1985.  An avid hunter and trap shooter, he was a life member of the National Amateur Trapshooting Association, a member of the Delaware ATA Association holding several offices, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Delaware ATA Hall of Fame for Trapshooting. Being inducted into the Trapshooting Hall of Fame was one of Mr. Carroll’s greatest honors.  He enjoyed collecting stamps and had an extensive stamp collection.

Carroll is survived by his wife Anna Luff Carroll; his three daughters Patricia Beebe and husband Richard, Susan Bryan and Theresa Garcia and husband Rutilio; seven grandchildren, Chris and Patrick Beebe, Heather and Andrew Bryan, and RG, Richard and Ryan Garcia; five great-grandchildren, Myranda Beebe, Dyland Beebe, Dylan Beebe, Andrew Bryan, Emily Cust and Ashley Garcia.

Services and burial will be private.

KATHRYN A. LECATES
Kathryn A. LeCates, 94, of Frankford, passed away Sunday January 25, 2009, at the Life Care at Lofland Park Nursing Home in Seaford.

She was born in Dagsboro, daughter to the late, Rufus and Linda (Long) Adkins.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rodney L. LeCates; two brothers, Howard Adkins and Rufus Adkins, Jr.; two sisters, Mildred Parsons and Alice Hitchens.

She is survived by two sons, Rodney H. LeCates and Robert W. LeCates; a daughter, Alma Young; a sister, Ida Leggs; eight grandchildren, Joyce Langley, Frank Reed, Elton Reed, David LeCates, Michael LeCates, Kathy Young, Chris Evans, William Evans; six great-grandchildren, Edward Langley, Ashley N. LeCates, Cassandra LeCates, Ashley L. Young, Jacob LeCates, Charlotte E. Evans.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, January 29 at 1:00 p.m. at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 43 Thatcher Street in Frankford, where friends may call after 12:00 noon.

Burial will be in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial Cemetery.
