Your Sussex Swaam was a little nostalgic after watching Frank Thomas's No. 35 be retired last Sunday.
Jim Joyce was wrong, MLB was right, now let's move on says the Sussex Swaam.
Your Sussex Swaam offers props to Oalkand A's pitcher Dallas Braden on his perfect game.
This week: more help for Haiti, a continuation of the recent positive steps on the court for local boys' basketball, and some consideration for the revenue that local nonprofits will lose once table gaming is legalized.
A welcome-back for the Countian's newest reporter, Rachel Swick; a nice, big parking lot to help the Georgetown chamber host the 2011 Delmarva Chicken Festival, and some more of your photo submissions!

From all of us at the Sussex Countian, here's wishing everyone the happiest of holidays. Stay safe, stay warm and hope for some snow! (But just a little. Maybe a slight dusting... that would be better than the rain they're forecasting). Click here to send us your holiday photos for the Dec. 30 issue of the Countian! This week: preserving the past, battling breast cancer and helping out Habitat!
Moms have it all. They get it from athletes smiling into the TV camera, they get the arm tattoo dedications, and their day is usually spent being pampered. What does dad usually get on his day? Another tie and the chance to foot the restaurant bill for yet another family meal. So in celebration of Dads everywhere, as we approach your day, I’d like to make just a brief list of the things my father has done for me
After a series of incidents last week in which threats were either called in or texted to Sussex-area students, kudos are due to school officials for acting quickly and decisively, and to the police for delivering a short, sharp lesson in what happens when you incite unnecessary panic in a post-9/11 world.
Late last week, Georgetown police executed a warrant on a Crestwood Gardens apartment building, where they discovered an illegal dentistry operation. The whole situation really serves to drive home Georgetown Police Chief William Topping’s longstanding plea for any and all town residents to bring concerns to the police.
When I headed over to the Georgetown Walmart last Friday, I had my camera and notepad, and was expecting a run-of-the-mill late-afternoon check donation photo-op. But as soon as I crossed the doorway into Walmart’s greenhouse, where the announcement was taking place, I knew I was in for something much different... and much better.
Last week, we published an article about the final book by local author and Oak Orchard resident Aubrey Murray, who passed away in late 2006. The collection of stories and photos, assembled by Murray's family, is a fascinating window into the history of south-central Sussex County, and a wonderful chronicle of one man’s perspective on life and times in and around the Indian River.
Standing under a dripping, sagging plastic tent on The Circle is not exactly the place you’d expect for one to experience a civic awakening. And yet there I was, only a mere two days after witnessing American history in action, seeing Delaware history live before my eyes.
Congratulations to all of the primary election winners. Here’s to what has been, so far, a relatively positive local campaign season – with a few sign-defacement troubles in the 41st District aside – and we hope that the rest of the campaign will continue to be positive.
This week, we do a little primary predicting (we ended up with a .500 record... not so bad!).
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and AAA officials issued heated statements last week, opposing a group of more than 100 college presidents and officials who have called on lawmakers to re-examine the legal drinking age of 21, in an effort to reduce binge-drinking on campus. And while the proposal smacks of college administrators simply looking to avoid responsibility for the (admittedly) gargantuan task of stopping underage/binge drinking on campus, we certainly can’t argue that the issue of how young people view alcohol is an important one.
Tonight (Aug. 6), Milton Police will celebrate National Night Out, joining with town residents in Milton Memorial Park during the town’s Concerts in the Park series to barbecue and educate citizens about keeping an eye out and keeping in touch with the police. 2008 marks the National Night Out’s 25th year, and along with another local initiative, is driving home a very important message: crime is crime, and victims are victims.
As the deadline to file approaches (it’s this Friday), the general election picture will become crystal-clear very soon. So let’s set a few ground rules.
It’s getting to be a great time of the summer: festival time. All over Sussex County, folks are firing up barbecue pits and putting the finishing touches on arts and crafts as musicians make a few final runs at their material in preparation for an evening concert.
