1 PRESERVE THE PAST County officials announced a $5,000 grant this week for the partnership that is working to preserve the Cannon-Masten house, north of Seaford. Whether its historic properties to open space and forestland, we have no problem with progress, but there is plenty of history and natural beauty well worth preserving.

2 FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and there is a wide variety of ways for you to help out, from donations to fundraisers and numerous special events (see page 30A for local events). Everyone knows someone who is affected by breast cancer, and with so many opportunities to contribute to the search for a cure, we hope to see good turnout at all of the scheduled events.

3 HELP FOR HABITAT Sussex Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, in Georgetown, put out a call this weekend for appliance donations. Whether it’s an old blender gathering dust or a microwave you replaced but haven’t been able to sell, if it’s in good working condition, bring it to the ReStore, 107 Depot St., Georgetown. For more information, call 855-1153.
