The man who killed Hank Huff [in a drunk-driving accident last year] was given one of the highest sentences ever given in Delaware concerning a fatal DUI crash. There is something that everyone needs to know if this has or ever happens to you. Get involved.
Our new mayor, Cliff Newlands, will bring our town together. He will make sure that the Town of Milton is managed properly and that all of its citizens get a fair shake.
Del Pointe is not your traditional race track and casino. If Del Pointe is not built and Ocean Downs installs slot machines, how many Delawareans and Marylanders who visit Harrington Raceway and Casino will choose to go Ocean Downs to spend their money?
I understand that [Dr. Earl Bradley's Baybees] building most likely cannot be destroyed however much I wish that it would be.Bradley is in prison and will hopefully be there for the rest of his life. Why do the people whose lives he damaged and possibly destroyed have to see his monument to children outside the office on a daily basis? Can no one take down those toys, cars, swings, statues, and signs? It is hard enough knowing the building is there without having these massive eyesores which seem to make you pay attention to it.
Have you heard it? Oprah's speaking out about her outrage with distracted driving. It goes something like, "If you're as outraged as I am with distracted driving, then tweet or go online to take action to do you part to make this world a better place to live."
I thought I knew what snow was all about. But now I’m discovering that Delaware is about as screwed up as they come when it comes to managing the State’s needs especially in the area of snow removal. You know, quite often it takes an emergency to reveal a state’s flaws.
The backers of the proposed [Del Pointe] casino always bring up the additional jobs for our county and the much-needed revenue for the state. However, little is said as to what these jobs will pay, as well as what impact the casinos will have on our already overburdened roads. Who will pay for these improvements?
[A] Ugandan bill that would execute gays and jail citizens who do not inform on them was likely inspired by American religionists. Now that [the] bill has been condemned worldwide, these American fundamentalists have slowly distanced themselves from at least the execution of gay Ugandans. But what had they expected as they instigated bias in a nation that already criminalized homosexuality?
Every once in awhile something happens that restores my faith in humanity. Today such an event happened. Sussex County Council persons, Joan Deaver (D-Rehoboth), George Cole (R-Ocean View), and Mike Vincent (R) denied the controversial Lingo-Townsend zoning law change (3-2) that would have definitely compromised the City of Lewes. Councilmen Vance Phillips (R-Laurel) and Sam Wilson (R-Georgetown) voted for the project which was expected. The swing vote was Mike Vincent (R-Seaford), who was expected to vote yes, but he went the other way.
The point I would like to make is, if you don't believe in Christ and don't want to say Merry Christmas, then that's your problem. I think if you don't want to celebrate Christmas then there is no reason to buy presents and that should close most store completely, as that is where the money is made.
I am sending this letter in hopes it will be heard. I just want everyone who has lost [someone] this year to know they are thought of and are not alone.
[Something] readers probably don't know is the fact that veterans are approximately twice as likely to die from Lou Gehrig's Disease as the general public. What readers probably don't know is that the VA is doing something about it.
Why would these people rush to pass this [health care] bill, one that eliminates a majority of abortion care. What was it that was said, why take one step forward if you have to take two steps back? Of course, that’s vague wording for a quote I barely know, but it seems to me that some common sense is severely lacking here. Then I figured it out. They are scared.
The recent application by DelaWind, LLC for a $350,000 state loan should require more scrutiny from public officials and DEDO’s Pre-Venture Fund Board, given the fact that DelaWind is a corporation headed by former Lt. Gov. John Carney and has been in existence for less than one year.
[Last] Sunday there was an article in the News Journal about legislators taking trips on taxpayer dollars. This wrong I have been critical of from the day I took office over 25 years ago and criticized this policy with few supporters to change it. I don’t take trips and thusly have never spent a dime of public money. I feel our income is such, we should pay our own way. One probably noticed the trips are conspicuously always arranged in resort-type areas.
Everyone’s help is needed! The announcement that Delaware will be losing the MADD office in Millsboro at the end of the month is very sad. Nancy Raynor, the Director of MADD Delaware, is a remarkable, caring person.
I am the parent of a student at Indian River High School and am in need of your support. Over the summer, the School Board passed the new policy regarding cell phones in school. The policy is a ban against possession or use of cell phones on school property while in session. Some people may feel this ban is a good thing, but what most don’t realize is the punishment for a cell phone found in possession is unfair and unjust.
We, as members of various groups and organizations in Delaware, developed a Resolution addressed to Senator Carper, Senator Kaufman and Congressman Castle. We pointed out the urgency of the need for reform and the compelling evidence of our current broken system.
WomenNetworking in Southern Delaware, Inc. has been a consistant and active supporter of federal legislation to help close the wage gap. We are part of a broad coalition of groups working to pass this bill, and we are asking individuals to contact their U.S. Senators to ask them to take an active and leadership role in getting this legislation to the President’s desk for his signature before the end of this calendar year.
Ruth Briggs King was executive director of the manufactured home communities landowners’ trade group in 2005. In April of that year she wrote a letter to some lawmakers suggesting that the State subsidize rental increases in those communities or that the state set up and run parks for people forced out by rental increases.
