I was born and raised in Sussex County and have lived and worked here all my life. It’s nice when I have the chance to visit other places, but I am always so happy to return home. One of the things I love about living in a small town is that the politicians are our friends and neighbors. In fact, that’s how I always thought of our elected officials. I never really considered them as people who could help me. That is until two years ago.
I work in the Learning Resource Center located at Delaware Technical & Community College. The Center is the only one of its kind in Sussex County where teachers, parents, child care providers, home school parents, college students, and anyone interested in the education of children, can go to borrow resources to help children learn. The Center has been located at Delaware Tech for many years and has a partnership with the Delaware Teacher Center and the Family & Workplace Connection/Children & Families First. A couple of years ago, the Center funding was in jeopardy, and the Center was scheduled to close on June 30, 2008.
The closing of the Center would have had an impact on many people. When the word spread about the possible closing, many people wrote letters to the members of the Joint Finance Committee and signed petitions to keep the Center open. A reporter from WBOC came and interviewed me as well. If the Center had closed, it would have also meant that I would have lost my job, and my family would have lost our health benefits.
I am very grateful that Senator Joe Booth, who at the time was our local representative, stepped in to save the Center. Senator Booth visited the Center to learn more about it and the services it offered. He met with administrators at Delaware Tech to see what could be done to keep the Center funded. He talked to many patrons who utilize the Center, and he answered letters to the patrons who wrote to him. He worked very hard talking to his colleagues about the Center and exploring different avenues of funding. Due to his hard work and commitment to saving the Learning Resource Center, he was successful! The Joint Finance Committee voted to fund the Center, and the services continued on with no interruptions.
I will be forever grateful to Senator Joe Booth and the many patrons who worked hard to save the Center. He showed me that he is committed to helping the people of Sussex County, and he is true to his word. He is a trustworthy person who can be counted on to help when needed. I hope he continues to serve the State of Delaware for many years to come.
