We're seeing some terrific articles, editorials and letters to editors in several of our Delaware newspapers recently and it is way overdue. I sincerely hope that this will continue until we get resolution to the many serious issues that the citizens of Sussex County have been facing for years.
I would appreciate an answer from Councilman Mike Vincent as to why he voted against the appointment of John Walsh to the Board of Adjustment. After stating that John's qualifications were excellent, Mr. Vincent declared that he discovered through the Public Integrity Commission that he is a registered lobbyist for the Delaware Manufactured Home Owners Association. Mr. Walsh had already provided that fact both in his written biography as well as during two in person interviews before the Council. Please note, his lobbying activities are strictly volunteer and are unpaid. I believe that Mr. Vincent is involved with the firefighters, both Mr. Wilson and Mr. Phillips are farmers, Mr. Cole is a realtor...this does not keep them from serving. Why should it be different with Mr. Walsh?
And speaking of the Board of Adjustments, it would appear that suddenly Richard Berl, attorney for the Board, is expressing concerns about the number of variances that are being granted without meeting proper standards. I believe that Mr. Berl has held his position for quite some time, why has he not spoken out over and over again in the past? It seems to me that he has not been fulfilling his duty to this Board for quite some time. Councilman Phillips is talking about changing ordinances and Councilman Wilson is talking about using common sense. The only thing that is really needed is for the Board of Adjustments to start following the established procedures.
And we average citizens need to do our part and be the watchdogs of this county. Please folks, attend meetings, ask questions, write letters, and when something is wrong, file complaints!
