What a grand, Grand Opening it was for our new library! I hope you’ve expressed your thanks to Board of Commissioners’ member Becky Breasure for all her hard work in lining up food to celebrate this historic event and to the less visible Board of Commissioners’ members who for many years have been planning and making all the hard decisions to bring about our library/community center so worthy of Georgetown, our County Seat. We would be remiss if we didn’t thank our staff for the tremendous work they did in setting up and planning the placement of books to make our reading experience exceptional. When working in the Friends office, I hear happy voices of people greeting people they hadn’t seen in awhile and taking the time to sit down with them and chat. The tables have people sitting with magazines and newspapers spread out. This is a community finding one another in a beautiful setting and thoroughly enjoying he experience.
With the increased usage of our library, there is a great need for Friends volunteers to assist the staff in many ways. The Friends focus attention on library services and needs, they sponsor specific programs of interest for the community, and raise funds for specific projects and items that the library might not be able to attain for itself. There will be training for specific areas of volunteering that might interest you.  Forms to join the Friends are outside the Friends’ office next to the copy machine. At scattered times this month there will be a Friend to answer questions and accept your dues. Membership is $5 per individual, $10 per family, and $25 or more to be a sponsor.
Friends events for the fall include the dinner/auction at the Cheer Center on Oct. 16; the sale of Whitney Christmas wreaths Oct.16 to Nov.8, and the Book Sale Nov. 18 to 20. Only Friends members will be able to purchase books on the eve of the sale, Nov. 17. Bricks may be purchased on a continuing basis for $125, but will not be placed on the walkway until 100 are inscribed because of the cost of setting. We have 38 additional bricks sold thus far. Another ongoing project is the purchase of bookplates to indicate that you bought a child’s book or a book for an adult to be placed in the library.
