Letter to Congressman Castle

I read the May 24 – 28 copy of The Castle Record. I too am grateful to the men and women who put on the “uniform day in and day out …and put everything on the line in order to protect the many freedoms, rights and liberties that, as Americans, we hold dear.”

But, Congressman, I was struck by the irony of your words. Last week you voted against the rights of many of these very same men and women when you voting against the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

As I pause for the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. on Monday I will, as you ask, “remember the sacrifices of our troops and reflect on the values and ideals upon which our great nation was founded.”

Congressman, I ask that as you participate in this moment that you think of the men and women in the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard Marines and Navy whom you chose not to include in your tribute.

I also ask you to remember those buried in Flanders Field and Normandy and those who returned through Dover Air Force Base who had to live a secret life in order to serve their country.

You and I are “forever indebted to these brave men and women.”
