State Rep. Joe Booth (R-Georgetown) released the results of his annual District Survey on Friday.
Rep. Booth, who represents the 37th District covering the Georgetown and Lewes areas, surveyed constituents about topics ranging from the budget deficit to cell phone use while driving a motor vehicle. Nearly 200 people participated in this year’s survey.
Three-quarters of the respondents were in support of the state instituting a furlough program for state employees to help stem a projected multi-million-dollar budget shortfall. In response to whether Delaware Technical and Community College should have a dedicated revenue source, sixty-five percent did not support such a proposal. When asked whether Delaware has a favorable climate for small business owners, slightly more than half said that the state does have a favorable climate.
Seventy percent of the survey participants said they believe that Delaware’s mandatory minimum sentencing procedures should be examined for low-level drug offenders. Approximately 45 percent of the respondents said police should be allowed to stop and ticket drivers who use a cell phone while driving. Participants were overwhelmingly against holding a motorist (or his or her insurance company) responsible for damages to a vehicle that is not legally allowed to be on the road.
When asked whether a state stormwater utility should be created to deal solely with issues of drainage and storm water, more than three-quarters said they were against the proposal.
Sixty percent of the people who responded to the survey said they would be in favor of an expansion of the Sussex County Council from its current size of five members to include more members. In response to whether the General Assembly is an open elective body, 55 percent said they believe that it is.
“In addition to sending out about 2,500 surveys this year, I also posted the survey on my website and directed constituents to the website in a recent letter to the editor, in order to generate as much participation as possible,” Booth said.
“As a result, I would like to thank the participants of this year’s survey. Especially in a year when we’re faced with such a severe budget crisis, the kind of constituent input I received in the survey has never been more important than this year.”
To see a copy of the survey, please visit Rep. Booth’s website at www.RepJoeBooth.com. Constituents are also invited to share their concerns with Rep. Booth at one of the two coffee sessions he holds each month. A “Cup of Joe with Joe” is held on the second Thursday of each month between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Georgetown Family Restaurant and on the 4th Thursday of each month between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at Café Azafran in Lewes.
