IRSD Board of Education election set for May 13
SELBYVILLE – The Indian River school board election is fast approaching. Elections will take place on May 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at several locations in the district.
Two IR students receive Governor's Outstanding Volunteer awards
DAGSBORO – Two students at Indian River High School are inspired to get involved and give back to their community and school, and they have been recognized for their efforts. Annamarie Brown and Cristal Wright received the 2008 Governor’s Youth Volunteer Service Award on April 16 at a banquet at the Dover Sheraton Hotel. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner presented 18 individual and five group awards at the ceremony to honor the young volunteers for their outstanding service to Delawareans.
County planners support comp plan revisions
SUSSEX COUNTY – The county still has changes to make to its comprehensive plan and on April 30, the certification deadline for the plan, Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission agreed to support the package of changes. County council must now give final approval.
Listening to 'Innocent Voices' in Georgetown
GEORGETOWN – More than 300,000 children serve in armies throughout the world. On Friday night, three local organizations will partner to bring the story of one of those children to Georgetown. La Esperanza, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the International Club of Delaware Tech are sponsoring a screening of Luis Mandoki’s award-winning film Innocent Voices at Delaware Tech’s Owens in Campus in Georgetown on May 9.

Final Georgetown election debate draws diverse crowd
GEORGETOWN – Members of Georgetown’s Hispanic community showed up at the third and final candidate forum last week, as mayoral and council candidates weighed in for the first time on immigration. The consensus among the four candidates was overwhelming; the Hispanic population plays a large role in Georgetown’s culture and economy, but a crackdown is needed on undocumented immigrants.
Child porn ring investigator recognized
WASHINGTON D.C. – The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children this morning honored Delaware State Police Trooper Ronald Garland for his work in cracking and shutting down a child pornography ring run by a Georgetown man.
Former White House Press Corps dean to speak at Cape HS
LEWES – Residents are invited to a free evening with author and former dean of the White House Press Corp Helen Thomas, who will speak at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes on May 8 at 7 p.m.
Sussex airport gets another new restaurant... again
SUSSEX COUNTY – Local residents and anyone coming in for a landing will have a new place to eat at the Sussex County airport yet again, possibly as soon as the first week of June. After talking with 22 restaurant owners, the county selected Paul Buchness, who has operated the Lighthouse Restaurant in Lewes for 25 years and caters for Delaware Tech in Georgetown.
