A Lewes man was charged Thursday in connection with a crash earlier this month west of Harbeson in which a Georgetown woman was killed.

Corey A. Ortwein, 20, was charged with one count each of first-degree vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. He also was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ortwein was being held at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in lieu of $23,500 bail.

According to Delaware State Police, Ortwein had avoided one head-on collision with a westbound vehicle as he drove east on U.S. Route 9 at 7:50 p.m. Feb. 11. Ortwein continued traveling east in the westbound lane of the highway to about one mile west of Prettyman Road in Harbeson, where his car hit a 1995 Honda Accord head-on. The driver of that car, Stephanie Marvel, 49, of Georgetown, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 44-year-old female passenger in Marvel’s car also suffered serious injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
