A second half goal by Cameron Smith was all Cape Henlopen would need to clinch the DIAA Division I Field Hockey State Championship Saturday afternoon at Rullo Field at the University of Delaware.

The Lady Vikings tilted the field for much of the game, outshooting Sussex Tech 21-1 overall. However, the Lady Ravens put up a fight throughout, keeping it close until the very end.

Sussex Tech goalie senior Grace Lee was outstanding, making 16 saves between the pipes to keep the Lady Ravens in the game.

After a scoreless first half, on a penalty corner Alia Marshall found Smith for the one and only goal of the game at 40:54.

The Lady Vikings capped off a championship season, having finished 13-2 overall during the regular season before knocking off St. Georges Tech (7-0), Polytech (4-0) and Sussex Tech (1-0).

In 18 games, counting playoffs, Cape Henlopen allowed only 15 goals against while scoring 82 goals-for.

They began the season losing two of their first three games, but went on to win 12 games in a row to close out the regular season.

In the postseason, they didn’t allow a goal, outscoring their three opponents a combined 12-0.
